Getting out of the car at Bottchers, a super loud hum/buzz filled the air. Could almost feel it. Turned out to be a zillion bees in a tree that was in full bloom with small white blossoms. Watched for a few minutes to make sure the bees were fully occupied with the flowers, then set out. The first half hour passed many of these trees, all filled with bees, but none seemed to take any notice of me. The top of Devil's Peak is anticlimactic; there are better views on the way there. Passed several groups of backpackers coming out from Pat Springs Campground. It must have been crowded there on Sat night. Headed north on a faint trail toward Mt Carmel. The trail passed through an oak tree graveyard. Some were lying dead, some still standing, dead. Then the trail passed for about half a mile through dense scrub and trees that brushed my arms on both sides. Reached the summit, where the chaparral was so high that I climbed on a big rock to see the 360° view. Could see all of Monterey Bay up the coast, and inland to roads and towns I am not familiar with. it was 4.5 miles to the top of Mt Carmel. Headed back to the car the same way.It was a beautiful day and an excellent hike.

Whistler BC 2013, Day 5

5th and last day of skiing at Whistler. Nice trails with a mix of types of forest. Got foggy overnight at the camp. Campsites were nice and secluded. In the morning, checked out the abandoned landing strip, which didn't really look all that abandoned. I expected a plane to land anytime. 8 miles to head back the next day. Back down the Indian Trail, which led to a creek where water was available. All the other creeks were dry or just about. This one was not super abundant, but it worked and the water was clear and tasted okay after treatment. After walking on the Olmo Fire Road for a while, turned onto Doe Ridge Trail. This is a lovely trail. Turned left onto Goat Hill Trail, and looked for Año Nuevo Trail. Turned onto what I thought was Año Nuevo, but it was an abandoned, overgrown mess, so I turned back and then found the real one. This was also a beautiful trail. Had an "enchanted forest" feel to it. Note: unless you really like climbing, you would not want to start out on this trail as it is very steep. But ending on this trail was wonderful. Beautiful views.

Tarwater Camp - Butano Ridge Trail

Camped at Tarwater Trail Camp, then hiked the next day. From 380 feet elevation to 2000 in three miles. Karen and I hiked and camped on the Appalachian Trail! We set our sights on a 5-10 mile hike to a shelter/camp site, to return the next day along the same trail to the car. We chose to start at Bull's Bridge near Kent CT and hiked about 8 miles to Mt Algo shelter, where we camped. Had a blast. It trail was rated "difficult" by the guidebook, and I guess it was. Lots of ups and downs, and some very rocky sections. Met thru hikers at the shelter; two southbounders and one northbounder. Had strong cell signal all day, which makes me laugh it's so incongruous.
