Marks offers thick second-growth redwood, creeks with awesome riparian zones, and geological wonders. The park is dark and can be damp and cool. The amount of vegetation is remarkable. We parked at Mary Easton Picnic Area because the winter gate was closed. This added 2 miles to an already lengthy trip but at least it was level. It started out damp and cool and gradually warmed up making it great hiking weather. We went up Aptos Creek Fire Rd and turned right on to Aptos Creek Trail which runs in an along the Aptos Creek. It is beautiful in the creek with steep heavily wooded walls. After several hundred yards, the trail took off in both directions on the north side of the creek. We continued to go up the creek and bushwhacked a short way on to the Aptos Creek Trail. In about 200 yards, we located the Loma Prieta Epicenter Sign. We then continued up the trail to the landslide where a good samaritan had installed ropes to navigate up and around the slide. The ropes were gone and the Parks Dept had installed a bridge made out of a large wooden timber and a handrail of loose cable. The bridge enabled us to cut our time down by a bit. Then , we started to climb several switchbacks and at the top, we saw several deep fissures in the ground. At the junction with Big Slide Trail, we took a break before proceeding towards Five Finger Falls (Monte Vista Falls) named after the Five-finger Fern which there is an abundance. The trail was in good shape all the way back to secluded falls. We returned the same way we came except stayed on the trail after the Epicenter Sign which took us right down to the creek about 100 yards further south from where we bushwhacked.
<img Lakes come into view. We parked at the trailhead at South Lake and took the Bishop Pass Trail. South Lake, Long Lake, Spearhead Lake, Timberline Tarns, Saddlerock Lake, and finally Bishop Lake. This trek just kept on giving better and better views until the final climb to Bishop Pass for the Grande Finale - a breathtaking view down on the several of the lakes and a new view south into the Dusy Basin. Numerous 13,000'+ peaks very close to the Pass. Would hike this one again anytime for the shear beauty.
