We started late, and walked the last hour in pitch dark. That's why there's no photos the last part of the hike. The steepest climb is in the very beginning, hiking up to the ridge at the tree of life. On the rigeline, there are still ups and downs, but nothing too bad. We had a very leisurely hike, stopping often for photo ops.

N Arroyo Blvd

Very fun and easy to access. This is a rare trail for the San Gabriel Mountains in that it is not very steep. It follows a stream, crossing it a few times. It is pretty technical with some ups, but mostly downhill. Sometimes really, really steep. I'm not ashamed to say I have yet to do this trail without at least once hiking the bike. The single track is moderately technical. Then, you end up on La Tuna Canyon Rd about a mile from the parking lot. The slight uphill isn't hard, but doesn't feel great after the fun, technical single track in a forest.

Dawn Mine

This is one of my favorite close to LA hikes. I got the idea from localhikes.com and THIS person's everytrail trip. I would say this hike is a blue square in difficulty. 1500 ft assent in 2.75 straight miles, eroded single track trails, major bouldering, poison oak everywhere, and the temptation to explore a dangerous cave all add to the difficulty. The trail starts on Ridge Fire Road, where it can get hot with the asphalt reflecting the sun. Plan to be walking uphill for an hour straight. At the dawn station "Trolley stop" where the covered wooden bench is, go left onto the dawn mine trail which becomes single track trails. This is where the poison oak and eroded trails can be dangerous. The trail drops into the valley, where the mine is. Everyone agrees exploring old mines is dangerous and shouldn't be done. I did find THIS map of the mine (with a upper entrance I didn't know existed) that someone else made. Can't vouch for the accuracy. Inside the mine, it's cold, wet, and dangerous. A 50 ft shaft going straight down is right by the lower entrance. After leaving the mine entrance, you follow a very rough trail, criss crossing the creek/sluice box. This is where you will be doing some major bouldering. From there, you take a switchback to the left, up past a cabin, and back on a real trail (still single track) which takes you back to the trailhead.Adventure pass required to park. Gate closes at 8pm. For even more info, check out Dan's Hiking Page for the trip. I'm not totally clear where, but some people have described a 50 ft waterfall on this trip. Not in August. I'd like to find it, though.
and when I saw this hike in the book, "Backpacking California", I knew I had to try it. The assent from Meeks Bay is much more gradual than from Eagle Falls and there are far fewer people on the Meeks Bay side of the trail. Overnight backpacking permits must be obtained ahead of time, so contact the ranger's station for more info. We thought you got them at the trail head with the day hiking permits and risked $5000 fine and six months in jail when we decided to do the hike anyway. Totally not worth forgetting to get a permit. We camped close to Upper Velma lake, 13 miles from the trailhead. Unfortunately, the halfway point of the trip is Pipps Peak, which isn't a great place to camp (no water). You'll either have a longer first or second day hiking. Camping at Upper Velma was awesome. Great swimming, good campsite, amazing scenery. We didn't bring a tent, but the bugs were manageable with some spray. Next time I will have a tent with me because of bugs and the fact that rain develops quickly here.Overall, a awesome overnighter which taught me some lessons (tents, permits) and inspired me to go on more backpacking trips.
<img for the best trail info. Like the casual hikers that we are, we left LA around noon, arrived to the trailhead in 45 minutes, and was walking by 1pm. The parking lot was mostly empty (contrary to modernhiker.com) Most of the trail is following creeks and under the cover of trees, so heat was not too bad, but I was feeling the slight humidity. Bugs were present, so bring repellant if it bothers you. I was really impressed by the cabins and in general the infrastructure in this area (i.e. emergency call boxes, erosion damns, rakes and water buckets for campers to use for fire safety). The falls was cool. Wish it was toward the end of the hike when I didn't mind getting wet. I didn't understand the "No Shortcutting" signs next to the falls and did the shortcut thinking I was following the trail. You are supposed to double back from the falls to pick up the trail. Highlight of the trip was seeing bears! We ran out of water, which was lame (bring lots!). Otherwise, a great walk in the woods.
The trip travels on fire roads, forest service roads, and improved (paved) snow mobile trails from Northstar. A 4-wheeled drive vehicle is highly recommended, but with the right attitude and a car you don't mind thrashing, any vehicle will do (respect the trails, though!!). Mountain bikers frequent these trails as do dirt bikes. So share the road and be respectful (be cool with dust
