We begin at the confluence of two channels of the Old River Control Structure. The US Army Corps of Engineers gave Below the Surface and the rest of the crew a tour of this engineering marvel. Capable of carefully controlling flows from the Mississippi, which has a flow potential of 3 million cu ft/s. The first channel is a privately funded hydroelectric dam, the second and third are Primary and Secondary Control Structures and the fourth is the navigation locks.
In his book, "Control of Nature", John McPhee compares the current coming out from behind these structures to the class 10 rapids (where one risks death by passing) on the Colorado, only ten times as wide. We saw large logs churning like toothpicks in a toilet bowl. McPhee describes the power of the Atchafalaya:
"Among navigable rivers, the Atchafalaya is widely described as one of the most treacherous in the world, but it just lies there quiet and smooth."
It is at the confluence of two such channels that we put in the Junebug, a 30 ft Voyager style canoe, hand-carved from cypress by John Ruskey, our guide and the owner of Quapaw Canoe Company. A second smaller Bell canoe would play the camera support role. And Kristian Gustavson paddled most of the basin on Mean Green, a Stand Up Paddle (SUP) board.
This river swamp is the largest in the U.S., a 1.4 million acre swamp, with Alligators, sunken buoys and boats. It was a high flow part of the season, and we were off without a second thought. All the months of planning and coordination, brought together what turned out to be a terrific crew of people. The good spirits warming our souls during the snowstorms, sleet, and howling winds.
The natural way of the delta is for the Mississippi to shift routes and it has done so in major ways over time, balancing out the growth of the delta by providing sediment to hold off the ocean. Now the Mississippi Delta extends out into the gulf meekly, spilling its sediment over the continental shelf.

Atchafalaya River - Gaining Ground - Day 6

Today we saw the cypress groves in their winter majesty. A truly majestic grove was marred by a 55-gallon plastic drum with a toxicity label floating in the midst of the trees. We loaded it up on our canoe and took it to our campsite after getting some crawdads and beer with some help from some Cajun locals.

Atchafalaya River - Gaining Ground - Day 5

Day 5 on the paddleboard and Kristian Gustavson is still paddling strong, but the upright position leaves you more exposed to the elements. Still made good distance, 30.5 miles total for Day 5. It was cold with a solid tailwind and a nearly hypothermic mid-day restroom break. Truly a moment of needing to press forward, there was no sitting still in these conditions, must move downstream.

Atchafalaya River - Gaining Ground - Day 4

Little Atchafalaya River was difficult to navigate with a 30-ft canoe due to the slalom like course through the downed trees. Tensions were high and by lunch, Eco-Warrior James Pribram had mild hypothermia so we made a fire and had lunch before heading onward.

Fort Pike Fishing

Bodcau Cypress Swamp

Starting from Bodcau Dam Rd, about 1/4 mile after the main Bodcau office- take a right onto the East Bodcau camping area, youll see a canoe dude on the sign.
