It takes 5 days (we walked between 6-7 hours each day):Day 1: Filght from Kathmandu to Pokhara (amazing view of the Himalayan range) and than a 30-40 min drive by car to Nayapul on a pretty bad shape mountain road. From Nayapul we started walking on a easy track together with our guide (Rishi) and the young porter (Bidur). No major hassles on this stage and we arrived at the tea house at Tikhedungga quite early where we slept.Day2: This was a tough day. We had to climb more than 3200 stone steps to ascend almost 2000 m in one day. Along the ascend we met several trekkers and porters. These small mountain villages are completely isolated from the valley and there are no roads or cable cars to bring people and goods here. The transport relies entirely on walking up and down the mountain for hours and days. Animals (donkeys and horses) are only used at lower altitudes where the path is not so steep. Porters transport any kind of goods (including people in extreme case) on baskets on their backs, hold by a strap around their forehead. For long trips (several days) they can carry up to 30 Kg and on short trips more than 100 Kg of weight. Training for this profession starts early, as we saw several kids with no more than 5 years old practising, with small empty baskets, the art of porter (up and down the mountain), with their mother tutoring. Day3: Early rise at about 5 o'clock in the morning. In the dark and cold we climbed about 1 hour from Ghodepani to the top of Poon hill for the sunrise over the Annapurna range. It was worth the sacrifice as the golden colours over the Annapurna South were amazing. Several trekkers gathered here with their cameras pointing to the several peaks rising above 7000 m. After walking back we stopped for breakfast at the lodge at Ghodepani and warmed our hands and feet around the fireplace. After breakfast we packed and started a steep descendent on stone steps through the subtropical forest. The day ended at the tea house in Tadapani.Day4: The track did not get worse, but my knees did and badly. I could barely walk down and there were several hundreds of steps left before reaching the valley. Each step down was very painful and difficult to accomplish and the analgesic pills were not working . Time was passing by and we decided to stay at Kimche before the planned place (Syauli Bazar). One important sources of revenues for these isolated villages is the money send by the famous Gurkhas - a group of people from these mountains that constitute special forces in the British and Nepalese armies ( "If a man says he is not afraid of dying, he is either lying or is a Gurkha.") . With this money the villages build mini hydroelectric plants, water supply systems and schools. Day5: After one hour of more painful stone steps we finally arrived at the dirt road that follows the river Modi Khola. Walking on a almost straight track was a bliss and we arrived the starting point within a few hours in the mid afternoon. The driver took us back to Pokhara where we had the final lunch of dal-bhat with our guide and porter. After a rest in our resort hotel we went for a walk by the lake and for some food on the tourist-friendly (although a bit uncharacteristic) shopping street of Pokhara. Next morning we flew back to Kathmandu.

Manaslu Circuit, March/April 2010

18 Tage Zelttrekking rund um den Manaslu, mit 8.163 m der achthöchste Berg der Welt, mit Überquerung des Larkya La (5.135 m).

Nepal MTB Nagarkot-Dhulikhel-Nagarkot

Statistics: Length: 58.8 km, Duration: 8 hours, Vertical up: 1130.1m, Vertical down: 1120m, Average speed: 7.1 km/hAfter enjoying the glorious sunrise view from the roof terrace in Nagargot, the day begins with an exciting descent by single-track trail. We pass through several rustic villages with a continuing backdrop of Himalayan views on our way down the ridge. This is is another exhilarating ride from where awe-inspiring panoramic view of entire KathmanduValley together with Phulchowki, Nagarjun and Shivapuri ridges can be seen against the northern boundary of Majestic Himalayas. The moderate trail passes mostly downhill and at some points it descends rather steeply (cramps in the hands of squeezing the brakes all the time..) . The trail brings us to Nala. The path is quite muddy and slippery, even in the dry period. After Nala (which is a nice, old city where a lot of people are working on the land), we climb gradually through the terraced fields, village dwellings and arrive at Banepa (which is a dirty, smelly and rather large city) from where a moderate climb brings us to Dhulikel. Here we have lunch on a rooftop terrace with a beautiful view on this panoramic place. We visit an impressive temple in Dhulikel. Descending through beautiful Newari farms, with their distinctive three-tiered farmhouses, we enter Bhaktapur (an ancient city, full of Newari art and cultural heritage) from the east. There are many temples and palace squares to explore here. However, we head back, northeast to Nagarkot on an excellent and quiet tarmac road. We take tis paved road via Bhaktapur instead of using the same dirt road we came because this would be too hard (rocks, bad roads and very steep ...). This is a 15 km detour and a gradual climb of 20 km uphill to Nagarkot, on the valley rim, passing steeply terraced farmland and houses that seem to be clinging to the hillside. It’s a hard climb, after having cycled 40km already.. However, if you're really exhausted, you can stop a bus and ask them to tie the bike on the roof. When we reach the summit we will be rewarded with the panoramic views of the snowy peaks of the Himalayas including a distant pyramid of Mount Everest (depending on weather condition). We stay in a beautiful guesthouse on the ridge.

This is only 15km round trip, but still a 450m climb. Worth the effort for the nice Newari style palace which dominates the view of Nuwakot. There is not much choice in hotels in Trisuli; expect Dhal Bhat & a cold shower. But the hotel is only 2 or 300 Nrs per room.

Phakding - Namche Bazaar

7. day trip Jiri - Kala Patthar - Gokyo - Lukla

Jiri - Deurali

First day from trip Jiri - Kala Patthar - Gokyo - Lukla

Lower Dolpa Trek

Nepal 2008 - Annapurna Base Camp Trekking

More pictures:http://picasaweb.google.com/PONOWNIE/Nepal2008Part1TibetansProtestOutsideUNOfficeInKathmandu#http://picasaweb.google.com/PONOWNIE/Nepal2008Part2#http://picasaweb.google.com/PONOWNIE/Nepal2008Part3#http://picasaweb.google.com/PONOWNIE/Nepal2008Part4#http://picasaweb.google.com/PONOWNIE/Nepal2008Part5#

From Home via Kirtipur up the Champadevi ridge, down to Pharping, across the Bagmati to Bungamati

This is about as close as it gets for those who want to make altitude meters starting from Patan. I only had 2,5 hours and took a bus back from Bungamati to avoid busy rush hour roads in the dark. An earlier start would allow for this 19k A to B run to become a 27-28k circuit. I am not yet very familiar with the Champadevi area and am still in the process of figuring out the nicest routes but we're getting there. The route is as straight forward as possible to Kirtipur, one of the original Malla principalities of the valley, and lots of those 25 minutes are nearly traffic free. Kirtipur itself is very runnable all times of day, offers some nice inner Newar cityscape, and is followed by rural roads through nice village area that bring one to the base of the Champadevi ridge within 40 minutes of home. The first climb is to get to a really nice village on the 'white house' hillock, from there it is up through another village with plenty of vicious dogs that won't be everyone's cup of tea to a major trail up to a low in the ridge at approx 1930 meters. The last bit up is on a stone trail under construction, which on the ridge line itself is of 'park' quality, something very unusual for an area this far out. Great views South and North! I turned towards hatiban, soon the trail becomes pine needle soft surface, through - yes indeed - pine forest, great running. This part of the ridge is prime picknick terrain and thus quite an eyesore in terms of waste lying around. Beyond Hatiban, the International Trekkers resort, this stops. I followed the short cut and seem to have lost the jeep road that hits the Dakshinkali road much closer to the ringroad than where I emerged, in Pharping. No problems because after a drink I could just cross the road and go down trails into the bowl towards the Bagmati river. There are many ways down this bowl to more than one bridge across and my haphazard choice resulted in lots of nice trails, crossing the bridge South of Bungamati. Great potential for turning this into a nice circuit, returning to Patan via Kokhana. Also great potential for this as access to a much longer ridge line run, across the actual Champadevi summit, all the way to Thankot. Something for the not too far future to explore...

Nepal, Langtang, day 2

Long, beautiful day. 4000 ft vert. up, 9.5 h. trek from Shyabru Besi to Langtang.A few short clips: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SP6HtYo1P6Ehttp://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FYMpcbufpm0http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GeIr17Anon4http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=n-xcaUgs1X4

MTB Nagarjun forest loop, 48km, Kathmandu

This is a nice pretty quick loop, all around the Nagarjun forest reserve. From the center of Kathmandu (Thamel) you head North East climbing up on the Trishuli highway. Just when you reach the top, at the police checkpoint, you take the dirtroad left, climbing steeply in granny-gear.4 km after the police checkpoint the dirt road reaches a junction at a temple and army base. Here you take a left, climbing up on a rarely used trail. This trail is not much used although it is often wide enough for a car. But at several points it is eroded by landslides, which make this trail impossible for cars. I don't recommend to try this trail in the summer, because it is a jungle of stinging nettles and other weeds, including many leaches. Most part of the trail you're riding in the forest shade. But in the winter (Dec.) it's a lot of fun to ride; you start with a gradual climb from about 1300m up to 1980m which is sometimes tricky because of rocks & fallen branches. There are several parts when you can cruise downhill and finally the long downhill is sometimes like a race track (packed dirt, many curves) and sometimes very rocky, with places where you can jump. Most likely you won't meet anyone on this trail, only a few patrolling soldiers. Finally this track stops at Cafe Hessed in Jawalakhel, Lalitpur. A recommended stop to recover with a nice fresh donut or cup-cake and a cup of coffee! (probably the only place in Kathmandu to offer these treats)

Nagarjun

Finally all major hill tops surrounding the valley in the bag. Took a taxi with Moire, picked up Richard in Lazimpath and drove up to the park entry gate. The first 4 km or so are a foot path to the gomba on the top; steep but easy path, parts of it even a stone stair case, and parts on a ridge and reasonably flat, always a joy to run. We had a bite at the top and then took the jeep road until we could take a right on another jeep road that is indicated on the valley biking map as a mountain biking trail. This bit of road was starting to be overgrown and when we reached an army camp we realized that we had failed to avoid the little blood suckers that thrive in this forest environment during monsoon. Each of us dealt with at least 15-20 but they climbed on again nearly as fast as we could get rid of them so after a frantic 15 minutes or so, sort of leech free, we decided to hit the road again and hope for the best. Had at least another two leech fighting stops along the way, great (former) jeep road but very overgrown. Also ran into some stingy nettles which produced more noises and invectives, but certainly a route to go back to after the rains and the blood suckers have disappeared. Switched my GPS off when we hit the tarmac road (the one leaving the valley for Dunche), but after tea, and noodle soup, and more leech entertainment we ran the last 4 km down to Balaju and picked up a taxi. Got away with only 20 holes in my lower legs and feet, not bad given the at least 40 little friends that I picked off my body. The pictures, as usual, are Moire's, and on top of that she's got a much more captivating story to tell:http://moireosullivan.wordpress.com/2010/08/29/the-joys-of-jamacho-peak-and-nagarjun-forest/#more-1859

Dolpo - Mustang trek

An attempt to climb Araniko Chuli (6034 m) and a wonderful trek from Dolpo to Mustang via the high passes near the tibetan border
