Make sure to bring warm waterproof clothes even on hot day. Weather can change quickly. An ability to read and navigate from maps is necessary. Some steep sections and a head for heights required along some sections. As always be prepared for the worst.

NICS Ramblers Irish Munros 2009 - Coomloughra Horseshoe

This is a walk I have wanted to do for a long time, especially since my previous run up Carrauntoohil for the geocache on the summit was done in zero visibility from the Devils Ladder onwards so I had no views at all.Today, however, the weather was perfect, with the clouds well above the summits, and the wind low enough to make the Beenkeeragh Ridge a possability. The walk up the hydro track was a bit of a trudge, but the views up the valley at the top were well worth it.After a bit of a false start picking up the trail heading up Skregmore we made a good pace up towards the west summit, then followed the ridge along over the main and eastern summits and on to the first of the munros, Beenkeeragh, and its famous ridge.Had been a bit nervious about this, wondering if it would be like Striding Edge, which I thought was fun, or Sharpe Edge, which scared the life out of me. Thankefully it was more the striding sort, and the traverse was easy to pick out, and not too hair raising, and after the final slog up the steep slope we reached the summit of Carrauntoohil, with clear views to the horizon in all directions. After a well deserved lunch, we headed down and round for the last of the summits, Caher. The steep path up to the summit runs just feet away from sheer drops all the way to the bottom of the valley, and at times felt more exposed than most of the ridge earlier.Once the summit was reached, it was just a matter of a long constant descent back down to the valley again, and the final trudge back down the hydro track to finish one of the best days walking I have had.

Ireland - Carrauntoohill

Beautiful trip around the highest peak in Ireland.
