I caught the second tram, had a coffee to give the pro skiers some time to test the line for avalanches (by charging and banging turns). Then, I dropped the slope of the arret and head over to the col des cosmiques at a leisurely tempo. While I was down climbing the upper couloir, Remy Écluse, a local extreme skier of 36-years, and wife came by with a rope, so I caught slide down their rope to the ski start. In contrast to the pro skiers hard charging, these two executed perfect and effortless jump turns down the line. The decent had about six tracks on it to confirm snow stability. It skied really well, with nice thigh deep pow. After the ice fall, a big snow drift blocked the traverse back to the ancienne piste des glaciers, so everyone was skiing the Bossons glacier. I had never done this exit before so it was nice to see where it went. After numerous pow fields and some loop-di-doos, you wind up in a stream bed of snow pillows. This is great fun until it turns to work and leg abuse. Then, there was the iced up trail back to cham ....

Pic des Chalanches

Pic de Chalanches is a great early season tour when the conditions are right, and today they were right. Later on in the season the skiing can be as good, but the approach is much longer and harder as the road from Villard up to lac de l’Orceyrette will be blocked with snow adding some 800m of climbing and 9km of distance on.We got up there early this morning so that we could do a little tour with a couple of descents. We skinned up through the trees towards the chalets de l’Alp, in summer the huts for the shepherds working the high alpine pastures, before heading south towards the Crete de Maravoise and aiming for the col at 2539m. All the way up it was pretty obvious that the snow conditions were perfect with last Wednesday’s layer of about 30cm of powder sitting well on the base that fell a couple of weeks ago.We were not the only people there and chatted to some Haute-Savoyards at the col who frequent this area for ski touring. The descent was superb, 250m of perfect powder snow with only four other sets of tracks to avoid. Then back on with the skins for the climb back up to the main goal of the day, Pic de Chalanches at 2779m. We caught up with another couple here who had their dog with them, a small collie. He seemed to be enjoying himself but kept trying to get a free ride up on the tails of our skis. The views from the summit are spectacular with the whole of the Queyras laid out before you to the south with Mont Viso making its significant mark just over the border in Italy. To the north there were good views of the Ecrins and Mont Blanc was visible in the distance. The descent back of this summit was fantastic. Again the same fluffy powder but a much wider slope with more room to crank in some big turns and a few rocky outcrops to hop off. A small traverse brought us to another pitch which brought us back down to the chalets de l’Alp, and then some combat skiing through the trees brought us back out at the lake and our waiting car. What a wonderful day skiing and such a pleasure to get out at this time of year. On the drive back down we remarked that with the sun shining on the cliffs and Ayes we could easily have got an afternoon cragging in as well had we thought to bring our kit.For great alpine ski touring holidays check out AlpineBreak.com

Couloir des Cosmiques

We were planning to hit Courmayeur as the skiers cleared, but they cleared in a snap, and so, Morgan and I were compelled by pow fever to ski the Couloir des Cosmiques yet again. I had a go at it last year but the road was snowed in far down the valley and I didn’t allow myself enough time. Today the road was OK and I managed to get all the way up to the summer car park at 1810m. From here the snow was patchy so I walked up the path for just over 1 km to the Cabane de l’Alpet at 2050m. The snow was a bit wind affected in places but by traversing a lot of the slope while skinning up I got a fairly good idea of where the good snow was for the way back down.Approaching the summit ridge I was in the shade on the north slope and the ridge was lit up by the sun hidden just beneath it. There were wisps of water vapour being carried up past the ridge on thermals all along the ridge (which my little compact camera couldn’t capture, sadly). There was a handful of Norther Wheatears (Oenanthe oenanthe) playing about in the thermals, again too small and fast for my camera. From the top of the ridge the panorama opens up and the views are magnificent. To the south the triangular summit of Pouzenc was stiking up into the clouds. To the north the tete de Vautisse stole the view and eastwards Viso was clearly visible as well as the brec de Chambeyron down in the Ubaye. The descent was good. I dropped in through the cornice, out of desire – not necessity, to give myself a few steep turns before hitting the more casual 30 degree slope back down to the Alpet. I managed to stay in pockets of powder all the way down, cranking out some nice turns. It doesn’t take long to cover 600m of vertical on a big pair of Movement Goliaths so all too soon I was back down at the snow line and my waiting pair of hiking boots.I sat and enjoyed the peacefulness of the situation, and let the happiness of being out in the hills flood over me for a bit before getting all my gear on my back again and heading back down to the car park and my waiting van.

Arc de triunf Paris

Paris ee

Mix europe

Pic du Jaillon - NE Couloir

I saw a nice looking couloir on the pic du Jaillon last weekend when I was up at Arvieux skiing with Ollie. I had a look in the book and couldn’t find it so I managed to get Hubert interested in going and checking it out.The couloir I saw is the unmarked one. Working out how to get through the lower rock band was bit tricky and we ended up going up further right than planned, but there happened to be a nice looking couloir right above us so we decided to have a crack at that one instead. It turned out that the last 10 meters were not skiable as the wind had ripped all the snow off the rocks, apart from that though the snow was great. It was solid chalky snow in the whole couloir. The top section of the couloir was between 45° and 50°. Then it flattened out a bit on the apron between the two rocky sections before getting steeper again in the next section of couloirs.

Lance de Domene

Très belle ballade.
