On
the way out of town we passed the DC3 wind-vane (it actually moved
while we were standing beside it). We also passed a guy loading his
KTM990 in front of a hotel. While we were stopped at the traffic
light I yelled at him “where are you going?” he replied “up to
Dawson”, “see you along the way”. We passed by Fox lake and saw
the evidence of the Fox lake fire a number of years ago. There was
still ice on the lake as we passed by. When we stopped in Carmacks
for gas we met the KTM guy again. He was on his phone but said a
quick hello as we were refueling. A little later I saw his bike
pulled off at a pullout in Pelly crossing. He was off his bike trying
to snap a photo of us as we passed. Thats when we stopped and met
Walter Bell from Montana. Walt joined the group and we soon stopped
for lunch in Stewart crossing at Moose Creek Lodge. Fantastic food.
We all continued on to Dawson City. Walt convinced us to splurge and
stay at the Downtown Hotel. A very cool and old building. We found a
great Greek place for supper. After a great meal we walked around the
town looking and finding the homes of Pierre Berton, Robert Service
and Jack London. A stop at the casino to take in a old cabaret show
was a lot of laughs. With the hopes of doing the Dempster thwarted
until a later date, we decided to carry on with Deena and Walt across
“top of the world” to Tok tomorrow. Before bed we decided to join
Deena on a ride to the top of the Dome to see the midnight sun. She
also asked me to check her bike as it didn't feel right on the way
into town. The view was spectacular from the dome, but Deena's bike
seemed to be less than amazing as it lacked power until higher rpm's.
Walt had gone to bed early without agreeing on a departure time. We
decided that it was so late we would leave late at 9:30am

June
6May 31

Today
started early twice! The first time was at midnight. Deena's bike had
been acting up and she had asked me to take it for a ride and see
what I thought. We had arranged to head up at midnight to the “dome”
to view the city and see the midnight sun. But first I was going to
take the 650 for a quick spin. I'm not real smart, but I'm sure these
things are supposed to have more power than this!! I tweaked the
suspension while I was there and looked for anything obvious but all
looked ok. We rode up to the dome for the midnight experience and
stayed up after 1am trying to figure out what Deena should do with
the bike. I'm pretty sure the spark plug is the problem, but
remembered its an odd ball BMW only plug and a disassemble required
procedure. We planned to look at it again in the morning after a good
nights sleep, and Deena was going to email a friend for advice. A
9:30am departure time was planned, but Walt had gone to bed early and
we hadn't made a plan with him.7:30 the phone rang. Robin started
talking to Walt who was eating breakfast, all packed up and ready to
leave. She gave him a run down on what happened last night and we
told him to head out without us as we weren't sure how things were
going to play out this morning. After Robin hung up, it suddenly
dawned on me... he's the US Army guy, WITH THE SHOT GUN!! (and great
company to boot).I quickly got dressed, asked Robin to call Deena,
and whipped down stairs to join Walt at breakfast to try and delay
him and get his thoughts on Deena's bike. It worked. While I
distracted Walt the girls packed up and we managed to leave all
together. Deena's bike was rough but seemed to improve as it
warmed up. She decided to do “top of the world” with us and head
down to Haines to catch the ferry to Prince Rupert, parting company
in Tok. We bumped into two brothers on KTM 990's who were also
delaying the Dempster due to the ice flow on the MacKenzie and a
broken ferry getting a new cable. The free ferry across the Yukon
river was awesome. The strong current and the excitement of the day
ahead was electrifying. Alaska was just ahead. The climb out of
Dawson gave us a good view of the Klondike and Yukon rivers as the
pavement turned to a great gravel and dirt road. With the
encouragement of all of us, Deena's bike made the climb with no
problem. Soon we really were on top of the world. Not a cloud in the
sky and following the spine of a ridge, we got a glimpse of what God
must see as He looks down from above. What a view!! Mountain ranges
off to the East and West. Deep valleys either side of us with big
drop offs at times, and no traffic. Cold, but amazing. The ride took
us higher. A bit of snow here and there. Awe inspiring views every
direction we looked. Eventually we made it to the remote US border
crossing. Very, very cool. Walt made it across, Mohawk on his helmet,
gun and all. We made it to Chicken for lunch. The Kelowna KTM
brothers showed up, gassed up and ate a snickers for lunch and were
gone. Chicken to Tok saw a few showers, more awesome scenery and a
good gravel/dirt road. Saying our goodbyes to Deena was a little
tough. She was heading out by herself with a less than perfect bike,
but insisted she was fine. We will be praying for her lots as she
heads for the ferry to Rupert and home to Edmonton. She has a great
attitude and is constantly making a new friend. Now it was just
me, Robin and Walt. We hit a few ugly rain showers, interspersed with
stunning mountain scenery and a good look at a female moose and calf
on the ride to Glenallen. The best part of the ride was Walt and I
laughing for 15 minutes after watching Robin get drenched by an
opposite direction truck who timed it perfectly. It was the only big
puddle on the whole trip. Robin was a bit ahead of us as we had
stopped for photos. We saw the truck hit the puddle and a wave the
size of a tsunami launch right at Robin. My heart skipped a few beats
and I held my breath as the wave broke over Robin. I can still see
the water ricocheting off her and her not missing a beat or slowing
down a second as she motored on while Walt and I cried laughing once
the danger had passed. Robin's Sena intercom unit is broken so we
can't communicate with her but hope to get it fixed or replaced in
Anchorage in a few days. After a great pizza supper we headed
for bed at the Caribou Inn, where we had a great time bugging the
owner, Mary, while we checked in to the hotel.

July
1

We
woke up to a cloudless picture perfect day. Robin was going to ride
solo to Valdez later in the day after sleeping in and doing laundry.
She had a great time visiting with the hotel staff and had a very
relaxing ride to Valdez with stunning scenery on both sides the
entire way. There wasa chilly pass to cross about 40 minutes before
Valdez, but with the sunny weather and the relaxed pace it was no
problem. We had arranged to meet her at the hotel around 7pm.

Walt
and I were in for a treat. We headed out of Glenallen for Chitna and
the gravel road that lay beyond up to McCarthy and Kennicott mine.
Just prior to the gravel which started outside Chitna we came upon a
group of about 10 other adventure riders. At the moment we were going
to pass them the leader got a flat in the rear tire of his BMW 1200
not 50' into the gravel. We stopped to see if we could help, but with
so many others around they said they were fine and we took off. The
road was filled with some pretty big pot holes at the start of the
gravel. There were sections of good smooth areas where you could go
faster than the posted 35mph, and other areas with big puddles and
deep holes. I saw the first puddle and slowed to 10 mph. Walt was a
ways behind and we were out of intercom range so I couldn't warn him.
He said he hit it at 54mph with water flying everywhere and up his
pants and into his boots! We stopped to look up at an old dilapidated
trestle bridge that had carried the train with cars filled with ore
from the mine. At the end of the road there was a foobridge and a
phone. Walt used the phone while I used the bridge. There was just
enough room to pass through the openings with my panniers, so I went
back and forth a bunch of times to practice. After Walt finished his
call to Bonnie (his girlfriend) we rode through McCarthy and up to
the mine. We ate a great lunch at the Kennicott mine overlooking the
glacier. We were a little pressed for time so didn't go right to the
glacier for the 2 mile walk from the parking lot. The ride home was
much faster as we knew what to expect. The whole gravel road would
have been a lot easier if we didn't carry all our gear. Walt’s was
especially loose and the weight up high as his gear was all strapped
to the seat. The ride into Valdez wound beside rivers, up hills with
amazing skiable treeless slopes on either side. Up past the cool
(view and temperature) summit and down into the beautiful town of
Valdez. Making it to the hotel we unloaded and got Robins note to
meet at the restaurant overlooking the harbour. It was 7pm on the
nose. We stayed at the restaurant till after 11, talking to each
other and all the people Robin had met while we rode.

June

Today
is a change of pace. We are on a Stan Stevens boat cruise out of
Valdez to see the Columbia glacier. Leaves at noon back at 7pm. We
were hoping to take the longer cruise to see the Meares glacier but
the trip was cancelled as the boat was being chartered on a trip to
Whittier. The crew wereamazing. The captain was a wealth of
knowledge. Everything from wildlife, Exxon valdez, glaciology and
everything in between. We thought Walt was going to miss the boat.
The weather stunning. Seas were calm as we sailed out of the harbour
for Prince William sound. History lessons about the earthquake,
Alaska pipeline and indigenous people came fast and furious. We
stopped to watch a raft of sea otters, followed by 20 minutes
watching a humpback whale and its baby “fluke” and dive, followed
by another big whale doing the same thing. Stellar sea lions, seals,
puffins, eagles, cormorants and even a bear and mountain goats on an
island were highlights of the trip. The glacier was very cool (pun
intended). As we approached we were surrounded by small and big ice
chunks. The captain did a great job navigating through the littered
sea. Lunch was a great bowl of chowder, beagle and cookies. Lots of
coffee, hot chocolate mocha’s kept us warm. It was a great day. The
beauty was incredible. The clouds started to roll in as we headed
back to port, and the rain started as we docked at the end of the
day.

Supper
at Eduardo's mexican restaurant filled the spot for supper. We went
to bed with the sound of rain falling and the prospect of a rainy
ride to see Brain and Alberta in Wasila lying ahead

The
bad news came in an email from Deena....

Hello
lovely folks!

I
broke down 20 km from the border. A nice kind gentleman towed me
across the border. I called AMA and was towed to Whitehorse last
night.

I
have been In contact with bill. It might be as simple as an air
filter or a low battery ( the vest and grips may have taxed the
voltage). The other possibility is that I got air in the fuel system
when I ran very very very low the other day.

So
lots of simple things to start with. Bill picked up a few things and
has them ready to FedEx if I need them.

Thank
you for your prayers. Despite the inconvenience, this has been smooth
thus far. I might even make the ferry!! Hee hee!

Yesterday
I spent some time at the Sally Anne, saw a movie and went back to the
info centre! ;)

We
are still praying she will be safe and get things figured out so she
can make it home. Deena is a real trooper and is always positive. She
seems to be afraid of nothing and accepts any challenge that comes
along in stride.

June

It
rained all night but after breakfast looked good. We left Valdez and
started to climb the pass out and within minutes the rain started
again. For about 20 minutes we were riding in an actual rain cloud,
so thick that we could only see about 40 feet in front of us. Our
temperature gauges were flashing “0 degrees' the whole way. We kept
Robin in the middle but none of us could ever see anyone! Prayer got
us safely through the pass and the rain stopped shortly after. Walt
is always positive andj if it ever rains he says his bike was gettin
dirty anyways. We spotted the same gang of 10 adventure riders from
Louisianna so we pulled over to talk with them for a bit. These guys
were all over 65, several lawyers, 2 doctors a ship captain and more
all just gettin away from work. They said they take a trip each year
on bikes. Then, when we were coming up on Brian and Alberta's road
and the sign says “ caution, aircraft use this road to taxi”!
About 8 houses all had planes in their yards with a gorgeous lake as
a backyard. A very cool road for 2 motorbike pilots to discover.
Brian's place had us all mesmerized as he toured us through his huge
hanger, which hosted several planes, parts and projects. Then in the
BASEMENT of his new house sits a Lake Amphib (float plane) ! In James
Bond style he pushed a button and the whole wall lifts like a huge
garage door so the plane can travel 20 feet out to the pristine lake.
We had an awesome dinner and visit! Alberta kindly supplied us all
with a special anti-inflammatory cream for our throttleitis and sore
necks and we slept great.

Montana Mountain Hut Survey

Members of the Yukon Chapter of the Alpine Club of Canada, the Carcross/Tagish First Nations, the Yukon Business Development Project (YBDP), and others went along on a snowshoe/ski to scout possible locations for a hut system on Montana Mountain, Yukon. We travelled "backwards" up the Mountain Hero bike trail from the South Klondike Highway near Conrad, up to the high point of the trail.

Whitehorse - Mountain Hero

Guided ride with Sylvain and Boreal Mountain Biking to the Carcross Epic - Mountain Hero. The ride is named after a mine that was operational in the early 1900's.
