I said "No, but now I want too". She said a bunch of her friends were going up to this cave, have a few drinks and other things...so I told her I better get there before the carnage - because there may be no ice cave after they get there. I hope she was kidding...but I couldn’t take any chances. Part of this trail is on a snowmobile trail, so I suspect there would be a number of visitors here on the weekends...but when I went, there was not a soul. I did convince a friend of mine to come with me in case the whiny hiker froze, or got his tongue stuck on the icicles.

I looked up the directions online and determined that, for someone without an ATV or snowmobile, this would be the easiest way. Parking alongside the Upper Midland Road, the hike to the cave begins. Today is supposed to be cloudy with sunny periods and warm...then why is it snowing??? Now the hike to the cave from the Upper Midland Road is no walk in the park...it’s a steady climb of close to 300 feet in elevation over 1.4 km thru a field...and that only gets you to the snowmobile warming hut. After that, you need to follow the snowmobile trail thru the woods (I believe it is Trail 835) for approximately 400m until you see the sign for the Ice Cave. After that follow the trail to the ice cave for 250 m and you are here. Yes, it’s a little over 2 km to get to the cave but it is certainly well worth it.

Now I thought I was whiny, but my tag along, complained the whole way... “I thought you told me it was only 250 m to the cave”... I said “Yes, after snowshoeing 1.8 km”. All I needed to hear is “Are we there yet, are we there yet”. So of course, I kept doing the countdown to the hut...“We are 1.36 km to the hut...we are 1.29 km to the hut...” Maybe it’s my time to pass my moniker on. I do have to say, if there was any hint of breeze, the snowshoe up to the hut would be very chilling. I can also see how someone can get snow blindness, the hike up the thru the field is all white, the surroundings are white and it is snowing.

Finally we arrive at the cave. It’s pretty cool...although a little tricky to get into. Fortunately, some smart person put a rope at the entrance to help haul you into the cave. The cave is not really a cave; it is more of a rocky outcrop that has been undermined over the years but erosion, etc. But in the winter when the slight trickle of water flows down over the outcrop, a wall of shear ice forms giving you the cave appearance. There is enough light coming thru the ice to allow people inside to see everything and I promise, there are no bears there...my friend said she was afraid that there might be bears there. The cave is about 40 – 50 feet long and the height inside the cave varies from 4 feet to 7 feet.

I would definitely recommend this trip to anyone! Snowshoes are definitely an asset, however, when we were there, my buddy walked with his snowshoes, up and back...he had the old style snowshoes and they were slipping while we hiked up thru the field...and yes he complained about that too! Once we reached the snowmobile trail, the snow was fairly compact, so you could walk without snowshoes.

To get to the site, Drive to Sussex and then take Route 1 south to Norton. Take Exit 175 to Norton and follow Route 124 for approximately 8.2 km until you find the Upper Midland Road on the left. Turn onto this road and follow it for 2.8 km. As you drive along the Upper Midland Road, you will cross over 2 roads...the first is Route 855 and the second is the Guthrie Road. After crossing over the Guthrie road, you need to go only 400 m and park on the side of the road. Then, let the adventure begin. To help out, here are the coordinates for the key points along the trek.
