what’s the best way to see bears?

Well, first you need to catch a beaver.

What,
and use it as bait?

No, you fly in the beaver to the bears.

Beavers
can fly?

No, not a beaver beaver. A de Havilland Beaver – a bush float plane that
can take you to the isolated areas of Canada that offer great bear viewing.

So,
where do you catch this Beaver?

I got one from Campbell
 River on Vancouver Island.

Is
that where all those beach sculptures are?

Yeah, I got the idea that it started as
a local pastime that got competitive. They have annual competitions and the
winners stay on permanent public display along the foreshore.

Drug
induced?

No, locals are reaching into their
creativity, delving into the cultural and spiritual side of their beings.

I
still think it’s drugs.

Anyway, we flew from there to Knight
Inlet further north in BC.

Why
are there so many bears there?

The grizzlies love the autumn salmon
run.

Salmons
can run?

Don’t start that again. The salmon run
is when the salmon head up stream to spawn. The bears wait for them, and just
fish and stuff themselves for weeks. There’s a man-made river network up there
in a former logging area that the salmon just love, and the bears love the
salmon.

Wow!
Is it a noisy frenzy? What do grizzlies sound like?

It’s surprisingly calm and peaceful.
The seagulls fighting for scraps make more noise than the bears. When the bears
do communicate, it’s kind of English with a Monty Pythonesque French accent.

Reflecting
Canada’s
bilingual nature.

Well, that makes them Canada’s
bilingual nature.

What
did they say?

Well, you get the smaller ones going up
to the larger ones saying,

“Anotherrrr salmon monsieur?”

“No,
fornicate elsewhere. I’m stuffed.”

“Eeeet is only waffffer thin.”

That sort of thing.

Do
you learn a lot about bear behaviour?

I solved one of the great mysteries
about them. You know the great questions of life – Is the pope Catholic?; Do
camels wear desert boots?; etc etc?

Yeah.

Well there’s a photo here that shows
bear do sh*t in the woods.

Get
out of here! Have you told National Geographic?

Let’s just say that the scientific
world is agog.
