We opted for the Brown Mtn. bypass option which is much harder but you get to subtract 1 hour from your total time. In my opinion it was not worth it due to the amount of time you are carrying your back up switchbacks too steep to ride. Otherwise this is a great training loop for other endurance events due to the varying terrain and substantial elevation gain. We started at the Sweetwater trailhead this time instead of Starr Pass and were happier with that since you get some of the more difficult singletrack out of the way early. This course consists of a lot of pavement and dirt roads, as well as the Arizona Trail and other single-track. The gas line section of the course was pure hell, there were multiple climbs exceeding 20% grade. I deviated from the course about 52 miles in but realized it about a mile later, which sucked because it cost me at least 15 minutes. The course finishes up by joining up with the 24 Hours in the Old Pueblo race course which brings you back to where we started. This was by far the hardest day on a bike I've ever experienced. My finish time was 8 hours 42 minutes.

Tucson Mtn Park Rock & Road Challenge

This was my fourth attempt at the Challenge, having completed the previous loop a few months ago with a total time of around 9 hours. I started at the small private memorial parking lot at Moore and Como Rd and rode north to Cougar Canyon Rd (no cougar moms spotted) and headed up the Jeep road into the mountains. The road is pretty steep in sections but it eventually levels out and you come to a windmill and then a crude "cowboy gate" which is the beginning of the Maus aka Mouse trail. It appears to be an old cow trail where someone has improved on the lines and it was surprisingly fun and flowy. Looking forward to riding it again. I hear when the county is done with the planned trails they are going to improve Mouse to make it more sustainable. Hope they don't sanitize it too much as seems to be the typical trail building etiquette here in Tucson lately. Mouse kind of dumps you out at another windmill/water tank in a flat sandy area with a cattle corral. You take more Jeep roads for a while, heading back up into the mountains past an active (chalk?) mine. The Jeep road gets pretty steep and rocky and finally you get to the top and are rewarded with a nice descent to yet another windmill/water tank, where the new connector trail begins. It has very nice flowy lines with a few natural features left in to keep you paying attention. I rode the new trail out to where I could see they were still punching thru to Wild Mustang, which it will eventually connect up to. So I turned around and rode back to the Wild Burro wash and took that (boring) to where it ran into Wild Mustang. From there I was on existing single-track, taking Wild Mustang to Upper Javelina down to the resort. From there I took the roads back to the beginning of the loop. WM and Upper Javelina are not really designed for bikes but if you love techy trails they are probably for you. They are mostly ridable with a few HAB sections. I would ride this loop again, especially once they finish the connector trail to WM which would bypass the wash. I ran into Mark Flint who said in a couple years they should have a nice loop punched thru the area that is multi-use and would rival the AZT in terms quality. Looking forward to that!

McDowell Mtn Park to Sonoran Preserve - 11/7/10

I started at the Pemberton TH inside McDowell Mtn Park and rode the Pemberton CCW to the Coachwhip Trail and took it to Windmill Trail which takes you to the boundary with McDowell Sonoran Preserve. Once inside the preserve I continued on and took Windgate Pass (what a climb!) to the saddle and then bombed down the other side of Windgate to Desert Park Trail. This trail seems like an old service road in parts and then gets narrower as you cross a couple roads and snake thru some urban subdivisions. I took the Gateway Loop CW to 104th St TH where I took the road to get to my pickup point. This was the first time I rode any of the trail in the Preserve and I look forward to riding them again. They are very well designed and a lot of fun to ride on my Epic 29er.

Starr Pass / Cat Mountain Loop

Started from Richard E. The first 1/2 mile is moderately easy, with a slight incline. After that, it gets much steeper with tight switchbacks for about 1/2 mile until you reach the junction with Heliograph Peak trail. This is the high point of the trail, and it begins a steep descent from here passing thru a recent burn area with very poor trail conditions. It looked like an effort was being made to restore the trail, but a lot of work still needs to be done. There are many tight, rocky switchbacks which eventually give way to smoother trails near the bottom. The trail ends at the back of the Upper Arcadia CG. This is a great DH trail if you are brave enough to try it. Will definitely ride it again. Protective gear (pads) are recommended.

Hermosa Creek Trail

We chose to ride this trail as a shuttle, leaving a car at the lower trailhead and starting from the upper trailhead. The trail is almost entirely downhill. First 6 miles or so are double track, shared with ATV and dirt bike. You cross the first bridge after 5 miles, and another one at 6 miles. The trail gets noticeably steeper after this and you pass a handful of connector trails that lead west to the Colorado Trail. After 14 miles or so the terrain becomes a steep sustained climb for about 1.5 miles. It is a real lungbuster. Finally you peak out and continue your descent to the lower TH. Total ride was about 20 miles, about 75% singletrack.
