of either of the most probable routes for doing this hike. Even though it was late August, the wildflowers were abundant and eye-popping, due to record snow accumulations last winter and in the spring of 2011 and a long wet cool spring, which delayed the melt-off.The trail is obvious all the way, but the signs are few and in need of replacement. Most of the trail traffic from Turquoise Lake to the hot springs appeared to be horse traffic -- NO boot prints were seen other than those of the 3 of us on August 24, 2011.UPDATE: Two of us who hiked this trail in 2011 hiked it again on 7/25/12 with 2 other friends. Without pushing, our time for the 22.5 miles (we parked the car outside the gate this time) was 35 minutes faster -- 10:25 total. The main piece of information to update is to report that there are several small water crossings that we did not recall from our hike in 2011. The trail tops out at 10,145 feet, but there are some remaining snow fields at higher elevations that are still melting, even after a much lighter snowpack in 2011-12 than we had after the record snowpack from the winter of 2010-11. These ongoing snowmelt streams provide water sources for some incredible wildflower displays and for people who don't want to carry a lot of water for multi-day trips. Caution -- There's a potential for giardia lamblia and campylobacter and their associated diseases, so be sure to boil or to use filters that strain out protozoans AND bacteria.

Amphitheater/Surprise lakes, Grand Teton N.P.

July 23, 2011 -- There is STILL at least 3' of snow on the ground at the elevation of the lakes (Surprise: 9570', Amphiteater: 9698'). Most of the trail up to that elevation is snow-free or has snow patches that are normally of minor consequence. Valley-level wildflowers are fading, but there are a lot of flowers along the trail with "spring flowers" in abundance at higher elevations. My GPS's batteries were about drained when we arrived at Surprise Lake, so I shut it off and did not record the additional .2 mi. to Amphitheater Lake. That's not a big deal, and the return trip is via the same trail, so there was no need to record it both ways.

Two Ocean Lake, Grandview Point, Grand Teton N.P.

We hiked from the parking lot at the southeast end of the lake to the west end of the lake via the north-side trail, a gently rolling (mostly flat) trail. It had more open meadows, less mosquitoes, and lots of wildflowers. From a trail junction at the west end of the lake we started a steady uphill .9 mile trek to the summit of Grandview Point, one of the few volcanic features in the park. Returned the same route. Nearly 9.4 miles round-trip. 1145' of "up."
