Being December 24th and having Christmas Eve festivities to attend, we opted for a short hike in nearby Alum Rock so that we'd be done as early as possible. This brought a nice 1,000' of climb (nothing like that 4900' the track suggests (sorry iPhone, and what's up with that HUGE track spike?)... My legs complained most of the way up and I had to push push push to make it to the top at a reasonable pace. The winds howled through the trees and the trail was more like a stream in places, but the real fun came on the exposed bluffs. There, the 75mph winds ripped my fleece beanie right off my head, and I felt lucky to find it later about 80' away, stuck in the tall grass. The wind blew me sideways, and even peeled the screen protector from my dSLR's screen! I've hiked in 55mph winds before several times but these ramped up the lunacy another notch and I had a great time.

Don Edwards NWR - October, 2011

This was going to be a much longer hike, but Dwayne overslept and so we started almost an hour behind schedule. Just as well, as Mike had injured one of his legs in a freak accident with his other foot...Still, this was a nice 6-mile hike in pleasant weather. We hiked the Mallard Slough trail just in time - which is why I chose this hike for today - as it will be closed for duck hunting season starting the following day. Also there was another sign, which if I read it correctly, suggested that the Mallard Slough trail will in fact be closed for a full *two years* for habitat restoration. As such, it seems that much of this hike won't be possible again for a couple of years. We may have only done half the hike I had planned, but at least we got the important part done!

Little Basin hike to Eagle Rock

I hadn't done this hike since 2006 I think, but this was my third time. Mike and Dwayne hadn't been here before though and I knew they'd like it.It's a short hike at around 4 miles RT. On the way up to the old fire lookout area the elevation gain is around 1500', and the trail is virtually all uphill. So this is short but good exercise, which was just what we wanted on a hot Independence Day weekend. We took the side trail to the great little overlook where there's a wooden bench to sit and enjoy the view. I call this spot Eagle Rock Eyrie, so named by my late friend Bud Gawlik who introduced me any many others to it.Closer to the trailhead, when you come down the first - and only - downhill section, by the stream there is an old cabin, see gallery.

The 'Iao Valley

This was the first short hike of a two-hike day. We'd never been to the 'Iao Valley before but it looked like a "must see" location and it really was beautiful. There are a pair of very short paved paths near the parking area, and then a dirt trail runs west from one of those paths. It splits into multiple paths that generally follow the Iao Stream west. We followed these paths for a while, taking many photos, before we needed to head back for lunch and our second planned hike of the day.Because of that, this track goes out to an arbitrary point, where the trail was starting to get steeper. I have no idea how far these trails go or if there is a specific end destination for any/all of them. We enjoyed what we did hike though, and found an unoccupied part of the stream to relax in for a while. This was the one of many sites where Kamehameha's forces had a notable military rampage, bottling up enemy forces (and families) in the valley and then wiping them out in such numbers that the bodies were said to have dammed up the stream.

Pinnacles: Balconies Cave & High Peaks Loop

Spring is the best time at Pinnacles, when the flowers are at their peak and it's not absurdly hot. Starting at the west entrance, this clockwise loop took my friends and I through the Balconies Caves trail (and through the short but cool cave section), back around the pretty flat northern part of the park, then up through the High Peaks trail where we hit the big climb.Fortunately, the climb is worth it with the reward of sweeping views and spectacular rock formations. Waihee Ridge Trail is short but uphill the entire way to Lanilili peak
(2569’) at the end of the hike. You’ll climb pretty much non-stop for
about 1,500’, with very little flat or downhill, until you reach the peak. Of course, the hike back is nearly all downhill. Along
the way up there is a bench with view of a large waterfall, but since the
falls are something like a mile away it’s not really a big selling point
for this hike. There were great flowers, trees and ferns, few other hikers, a mongoose, and some colorful birds. This
was actually our second hike of the day (after the 'Iao Valley, I have a
trip here for that one too) otherwise we would have relaxed and had lunch on the peak, but the weather wasn't really good for that as it turned out anyway, The
trails and overlooks – of the ocean, Kahalui and the bay, and the
Waihee Valley – however are all just gorgeous, making this one of the
prettiest hiking trails I’ve ever been on. You know it’s nice when tour
helicopters are regularly flying through the valley (below you!) as you
hike this trail. Cherry Cove Trail in particular was deserted except for a group of 5 or 6 deer that I encountered.I'd been wanting to do this exploration for some time now, so it was a wonderful day out hiking, and helped make up for the disappointment of little-to-no snow up on El Sombroso that I'd been hoping for!

Calero - Bald Peaks Loop

This was the first hike my "Hillside Stragglers" group had done in several months, and we handled the elevation gain well for being out of practice.
