Bill Moore Lake. It's longer and a more difficult way to get to Bill
Moore Lake than the usual way from Empire. It should not be run
downhill in the opposite direction because it is nearly impossible to
pass anyone in some places and uphill traffic will have the
right-of-way.
The trail begins as a right turn immediately after passing under I-70.
You'll pass through a residential area and the trail begins at the end
of the street. You'll begin climbing right away, parallel to the Bill
Moore Lake trail but a few miles east of it.
Though you will have to turn left to travel west to connect with Bill
Moore Lake, you won't do this at an intersection. Continue north and
uphill at all intersections, no matter how tempting and well-traveled
they look. The place where you turn left is almost a 90 degree turn but
there is no other way to go on the trail (there is no straight or right
turn).
The climb is very steep almost all the way to the turn. When the trail
is dry it can be risky to drive on its edge as the dirt is very fine and
not very packed. Drive carefully where rocks place you near the edge!
You should not drive this trail alone.
There are a few sections of rock that may high-center some vehicles. Careful tire placement is necessary.
Once you make the left turn the trail levels out somewhat. At one of
the first clearings you will see the trail head to Mill Creek on your
right, marked 171.3. Continue to snake through the trees to find road
183.1 and the Bill Moore Lake trail.

Ferrata Haid Steig / Rax

Thursday morning was beautiful bluebird sky's, no wind, but the sun was well on it's way to warming up the day. Temperatures were expected to be 105 during the heat of the day, so I wanted to get an early start. Arriving at the Red Rock Country parking spot, which serves as the trailhead for the mountain biking, hiking loops that surround Courthouse Butte and Bell Rock, I paid my $5.00 use fee at the handy electronic dispenser and parked my car. Nearly full, I guess I wasn't the only one trying to beat the heat. Picking up my pack, hiking pole, and turning on the GPS, I headed for Courthouse Butte. The approach is straight forward, following the well marked path, the most direct route to arrive at the left (west) edge of Courthouse Butte. The massive bowl that exists on the backside of Courthouse Butte is the direction of travel. Standing just to the east, from the longest leg of the "U" shaped bowl, I spot a trail and proceed up the vegetative ramp. The trail is used, with sandy, loose rock. Easy to negotiate, I soon arrive on the slickrock hump of this section. A small cairn marks the hump and beautiful views of Bell Rock is seen to the west.A trail skirts around the cliff band toward the center of the bowl and I follow this path only to be cliff bound. Nice views but not the direction of travel. I backtrack and follow the trail north from the slickrock hump, up and across a small exposure to the upper cliff band. This is the direction of travel as I make my way to the right hand side of the bowl, above the impressive dryfalls as seen from the trail. Turning north again several 4th class moves are involved in obtaining the next level of cliff bands. The holds are good and a double piton exists about 40' feet above to belay weaker climbers or to aid in descent. Continuing north through the slickrock wash, climb up and over to obtain the right hand side and proceed to the north end of the bowl. This spot is distinctive because of a "fan" shaped rock formation in the center. I continue to follow the cliff band to the west and then north, only to discover it's the wrong direction again. I forget that Courthouse Butte has many climbing routes and undoubtedly these side trails lead to other climbing areas, but I continue to focus on finding the scramble route. Backtracking once again, I follow the ugly boulder, bushwacking, wash on the west side of the fan to the next cliff band level. Now turning right I proceed along the cliff band (to within a few feet of where I was forced to turn around on my last backtrack) and discover the 5th class move. Hiking up and under a Juniper Pine tree, climb the 3rd class slickrock to the base of the 5th class move. The route is divided into two main climbs. The first move is probably a 5.2 move and is neatly sewed up with a well placed #6 nut or small cam. One is plenty, but there is a good crack system for two if needed. Next is an ample ledge and the 5.6 move is clearly seen. A bolt about 8 feet off the ledge and a solid piton at about 11 feet make for secure climbing. The foot holds are good (for climbing shoes) and a sizable (10") ledge exists at about 6 feet off the ground. The crux is a small finger hole, over the crest, which makes for a somewhat awkward move to the top. A nice pair of bolts exist for rappelling.I set up the rappel and dropped all my gear (except camera and GPS) for my summit ascent. Class 2, somewhat chossy, climb to the top. A nice summit cairn and summit register exists. Beautiful day, beautiful technical hike.

Wichtiger Hinweis: Der Track gibt den ungefähren Wegverlauf vom 14.08.2012 wieder.
