Many of the players were only visible to us on the driving range (vs on the golf course)Also on the course, we saw the European golfers, specially we saw: José María Olazábal, Luke Donald, Graeme McDowell, and others. We also met some really nice visitors from overseas. We hope they are having a good time in the Chicago area.Overall, the players were very relaxed. They didn't mind camera clicking away. The players would play sometimes two balls, or they would finish a hole, then throw some balls in a green side bunker and practice some sand shots. We will be sure to watch the rest of the tournament on TV for the rest of the weekend. It is so exciting have the Ryder Cup in the Chicago area!

Los Angeles River, LA Street Art, Grand Central Market, Disney Concert Hall

For the last half day of our photography class, we toured a few more places: we started at the Los Angeles River, then drove over to a section of downtown LA that featured street art, we then walked through the lively Grand Central Market, then we took a ride up the Angel's Flight funicular to get a fantasic view of the downtown skyscrapers and Frank Gehry's postmodern Walt Disney Concert Hall. Here's some comments on our stops:LA River. So we have all seen the river in Hollywood Films, it is a concrete channel usually dry, and a favorite scene for Transformers, Terminators, Dark Knights and even drag racing high schoolers fromo the movie Grease. We drove onto the river bed through a very narrow aquaduct near the iconic 6th Street bridge. We took pictures of some of the other bridges, the many River Stilts, and some of the other people we met while visiting... all the while feeling like we sneeked into a spot that only Hollywood is allowed. Street Art. Between 2nd and 3rd street, there's a big splash of beautiful street art. Our host took us to some of the finest work. I took some nice pictures. It was interesting to find the super nice R23 sushi restaurant; it had big picture windows viewing the nearby street art. Grand Central Market. After the river we drove over to the Grand Central Market, LA's oldest open air market. There we found vendors selling fresh produce and prepared meals of many ethnic varieties. It was a very colorful, lively place to have lunch and meet people. Afterwards, we walked across the street and toured the Bradbury building, the Italian Renaissance Revival architectural landmark featured in Blade Runner and other Hollywood films, TV Shows, and music videos. Both places were a fun view of the inside of LA!Disney Concert Hall. We walked a few blocks toward the skyscraper area of the downtown area. We took a short cut up the hill by riding on the Angel's Flight funicular. We walked by the Museum of Contemporary Art to the Disney Concert Hall. The lighting was perfect and we were able to get great images all around Gehry's iconic stucture.

Flower Market, Union Station, Hollywood Blvd, Byzantine-Latino, Getty Museum

For our main full day in Los Angeles, our photography class visits a wide range of destinations: Flower Market, Union Station, Hollywood Blvd, the Byzantine-Latino Quarter, and the Getty Museum. Here's some notes I took for each of these places.Los Angeles Flower Market District. This is a few blocks in the downtown LA area that is home to wholesale flower distribution centers. We visited one early Saturday morning; it was an open space full of flowers for sale in bulk. The shoppers were carrying arms full of bouquets of flowers for their retail stores or other floral activity. Everyone was really friendly; we ran into a couple of wedding planners who breathlessly exclaimed they were buying flowers for their weddings later that day. There's a small admission fee for members of the general public. Wow, I have never seen anything like this.Union Station. Opened in 1939, this historic grand station was built in a California mission style by the same designer as the LA City Hall. It's a very nice space; the waiting area was full of families and other travelers; the courtyard had a photographyer and a fashion model. Hollywood Boulevard. We parked on Cherokee Ave, walked West along Hollywood, past Highland Ave, all the way to La Brea Ave. This whole stretch, named the Hollywood Walk of Fame, featured brass stars embedded into the sidewalk named for famous stars of film, tv, and music. The highlight was at Highland Ave: the Kodak Theatre, the Hollywood and Highland Shopping Centre and Grauman's Chinese Theatre are the spots where the action is. There tour guides, street performers dressed in all sorts of customs, shopping, and an excellent view of the famous Hollywood sign all happen in this narrow stretch of the boulevard. Alot of fun!Byzantine-Latino Quarter. We briefly stopped in the BLQ area to visit the beautiful St Sophia Greek Orthodox Cathedral and have lunch at this iconic Papa Cristos. These two landmarks of the former Greek town are now part of what is predominatly a nieghborhood of people of Mexican and Central American decent. We arrived at the church just as a baptism was completing... the same family also had lunch at Papa Cristos.Getty Museum. We visited the Getty Center to see the art, the architecture and the people. I enjoyed taking pictures of all of these things, but as a visitor to great art museums around the world, I enjoyed seeing masterpieces from Rubens, Van Dyck, Rembrandt, David, Turner, Renoir, Monet, and perhaps the most treasured work by Van Gogh. The architcture was beautiful and the inner courtyard was a very social, friendly, gathering place for people to just relax. As one couple told us on the tram from the parking area, "we are just here to make-out."This was a full day of touring and photographing. Attached to this posting are my favorite images. Today was a balance of visiting places and meeting people. The images capture the places, but my interactions with the people make this day memorable.

Venice Beach Boardwalk and Santa Monica Pier

For my first evening in Los Angeles, our photography class went to the coast and went for walking tours at Venice Beach and the Santa Monica Pier. I've been to LA before, and starting at these two places, I am about to see LA as I never have before!Venice Beach Boardwalk. This a people place! Street perfomers, preachers, skateboarders, muscle-bound weight lifters, and merchants of all varieties of products and services, making this place unique and wonderful. Clearly there were people who were here to go to the beach, but you want come here to experience the boardwalk and the wonderful variety of people.Santa Monica Pier. After sunset, we drove a little North along the coast, and we went for a walk on the Santa Monica Pier. My first reaction was that I had seen this before -- it has been featured in countless TV shows, music videos and movies. The was a very popular destintation for both locals and visitors like me. The pier features the Pacific Park amusement park; lots of families, lots of merchants and artists. For this visit, my focus was the pier, but there was also a beautiful beach.A theme for the day: LA is about people. There's lots of nice landmarks and buildings, but for this day, we learn about LA through its wonderful people!

Cantigny Park and Gardens - 1st Division Museum, Rose and Prairie Gardens

We had relatives visiting from out of town and we took them to see the beautiful autumn colors at the Cantigny Park. This park is the former grounds of the founder of the Chicago Tribune, Robert McCormick, who fought in the US Army's First Division, and built a museum in their honor. Our visit included the museum, the Rose Garden and the Prairie Garden.

Danada Sunset Prairie Flowers

After a
daytime bike ride through the Danada Forest Preserve’s wildflower prairie, we
decide to go back and take pictures of the wildflowers using our high quality
camera. The prairie is awash in bright
yellow black-eyed susan, coneflowers, and goldenrod. We waited until sunset to get better
lighting.

On our bide
ride earlier in the day, the pictures were taken while on a bike moving 10mph
with the sun glaring bright mid-day light; ok pictures, but not great.
The pictures in this separate posting are so much nicer than earlier in the day.

We weren’t
alone. There was another couple of
photographers also on the trail. We were
both following the last rays of Sunlight hitting the flowers. It really is a beautiful time of year at the Danada
Forest Preserve.

Lots of people fishing, lots of people enjoying the beach, and with the surf up, the surfing was really fun to watch. This was a very happy, very social gathering area. It was fun to see people cheer when someone caught a fish or when someone caught a big wave… I really got lost in the vibe. I was delighted to see the beautiful splash of orange that filled the sky as the sun set.Early the next morning we went back to Oceanside, but this time we went to the harbor. The harbor has people catching bait, paddling their kayaks, and getting ready to go out fishing. The Snowy Egrets were watching everyone, looking to sneak a fish. Our hosts treated us to breakfast by the lighthouse, and we left for our next destination. The Oceanside Pier, first built in 1888, is the longest wooden pier on the West Coast.
