We followed route E according to the many suggested routes shown on the map and trail signs. Seeing only the south half of the park, we took the tram to the top at St4 and walked down the walkway viewing the beautiful scenery the entire way. We finished with a quick boat ride across the lake.
<img the Grand Westin Berlin), we took a mellow stroll at sunset and saw some beautiful architecture along the waterfront. This city has been through a lot, but it has recovered nicely! The landmark Brandenburger Tor, the only surviving city gate marks the western terminus of Unter den Linden. We saw it at sunset. It once marked the boundary between East and West Berlin. It is now the symbol of unification. The gate is crowned by Quadriga, a 2-wheeled chariot drawn by 4 horses and driven by the winged goddess of victory. The is a room of silence, Raum der Stille, where you can sit and contemplate peace. The gate opens up into Pariser Platz, which hosts the embassies of the U.S., U.K., and France. The Reichstag is another Berlin landmark. In May 1999, it once again became the seat of the bundestag, the German parliament. There's a striking glass dome above the plenary hall. We ended the evening with a great middle eastern dinner on Oranienburger. So many great restaurant options.
<img (aka Museum Island). We stopped at the site for the infamous book burning at Bebelplatz, which took place on May 10, 1933. A poignant below-ground memorial of empty book shelves marks the spot. Bebelplatz is surrounded by many historical buildings. Visited the Neue Wache, Germany's central memorial to victims of fascism and militarism. In it are the tombs of an unknown soldier, resistance fighter and concentration camp victim. There's a sculpture of Mother and her Dead son by Kathe Kollwitz. Continuing west on Unter den Linden, we cross the bridge to the great neo-Renaissance Berliner Dome. A dominating structure on Museumsinsel. Behind the Berliner Dome in the distance is the Fernsehturn, TV tower. It's 365 m tall. Similar to the one in Shanghai.

Berlin Bicycle Tour

We rented some bikes from Take-a-Bike and visited the Checkpoint Charlie Museum, the Topography of Terror exhibit along the Wall, the Tiergarten and eventually Schlosspark Charlottenburg.
