From Breck up Swan River to Georgia Pass, across the ridge, and back down to the Swan River. Unfortunate, I was stymied as you can tell from the track. I ran into a section that I wouldn't even take a tank into. (Found a rental jeep nearby that was severely stuck.)Back out the way I came in, to Breckenridge for lunch, then back to find a different route. Stymied again. I was within a couple hundred feet (vertically) of the top that would have allowed me to drop down into the Keystone area. Maybe with a four stroke and lot's of nerve I'll make it sometime. I experienced my only "getoff" of the day trying to get up the hill.A full day's ride (70 miles), and the bike performed well. That is, until I stopped on the way home to fill it with gas. As I drove off, I bounced the trailer pretty well over a bump, heard a crash, and couldn't see the bike in the mirror. It was lying sideways on the trailer (could have been worse - could have fallen off the trailer). Broke the throttle cable housing on the handlebars, otherwise OK. Lesson - make sure the tie down straps are VERY snug. All in all, a very good day!Art

Death Valley

This was a 3 day trip to Death Valley with Roy, Suzana, George and Myself. Parking just outside of Montezuma, the trail quickly gained altitude. Attained my highest altitude on the KDX at one point, as you can see from the stats - 12,900 ft. The wind was blowing about 30 knots up on the ridgeline, and the temperature was probably in the mid-40's, so it got a little chilly.Lot's of mountain goats today as well, which was a real treat. They didn't seem too alarmed at the motorcycle. As a matter of fact, at one point I had to kind of encourage them to get off the road.I got my feet wet during a stream crossing on the way to Webster Pass. Nothing like having to put your feet down in 18 inches of water. I made a pit stop further up the road to wring out my socks. The longest of the tracks was Webster Pass. There was a young man there on an ATV who was kind enough to take my picture. After discussing the road with him, I felt comfortable dropping off the south side of the pass and returning the same was an hour or so later.Only one "getoff" today, but it was pretty spectacular. Thank goodness for armor and helmets.I thought I'd better get this ride in today, since the weather forecast is for snow above 10,000 ft tonight. If the snow is significant, that could be it for some of the terrain I was on today.

Omeo to Tom Grogin

Giro in moto all'isola di Dugi Otok (Croazia)

Traversata motociclistica della splendida isola di Dugi Otok (Isola Lunga) in Croazia

Ride OUt In Eifel Regeon, Germany

8 of us from England traveled over to sample the delights of Germany and take in the treat that is the Nurburgring. 4 Days we took. 1st day getting there. 2nd day ride out and trip to the 'ring. 3rd day ride out and another trip to the ring. 4th day long slog home. fall color. On the way already it became clear that Atlantic Highlands retains the fall colors later into the season than the rest of New Jersey, heading west and then north the leaves had mostly fallen, but there was enough of a color splash here and there to make up for it... I only stopped at times to snap a picture, but the weather was fantastic for late November, and the ride was fun.Having once again planned the route with my trusty bikeroutetoaster.com app, I've also recently become aware of a great way to plan a route using google maps directly. In google maps I can modify a route to suite me by dragging it onto the roads I'd like to travel... However, the problem has been that there is no good way to get a google map route converted and downloaded to my Garmin GPS. Well, now there is a fantastic site that does just that: MaptoGPX Once in Port Jervis, it was time to shed some layers of clothing, stop for lunch at the Erie Hotel and Restaurant, and then begin the Hawk's Nest part of the ride... About four miles from Port Jervis, the section of New
        York
Route 97 has been frequently used in television commercials and
advertisements. A 30 minute drive from Port
Jervis along this scenic road will lead to the oldest wire suspension bridge in the United
States and a museum/home of noted
    author, Zane Grey.The overall
trip was approx 320 miles, a good day out...

LAB2V Dual Sport Tour

The LAB2V (Los Angeles to Barstow to Las Vegas) Dual Sport Tour is a
motorcycle event that began as an off-road race from Barstow to Vegas
in the '60s. This year was the 26th annual event. The ride is a
two-day event, starting this year in Palmdale, CA, overnighting in
Barstow, CA, and finishing in Las Vegas, NV. There were over 350
participants, all riding street-legal dirt bikes. The full route
covers from 400 to 500 miles, mostly offroad - dirt roads, jeep trails,
and single-track trails. It is no longer a race - it's officially
called a tour. Our four rider group was from California,
Colorado, Indiana and Alaska. We were riding a Suzuki DR650, a KTM 525
EXC, a BMW 650 XChallenge, and a KTM 300 XCW. The Suzuki DR650 was
replaced enroute with a Yamaha TW200 due to mechanical problems. The
weather was perfect - morning temps around 40, reaching 70 during the
day. Some of the participants saw a few raindrops/hail, but our group
enjoyed a dry two days. Both days are full days. All of our
group arrived in Barstow after dark on day one. To avoid the same
problem on day two, we skipped part of the offroad route and picked up
the route at Baker, CA. As a result, we were treated to a spectacular
ride down Red Rock Canyon in Las Vegas shortly before sunset. The shorter track displayed on the map was an additional ride we took after the LAB2V from Pahrump, NV through Death Valley to Mengel Pass and back. This was probably the most scenic ride of the entire trip.

Mt Evans Visit

Beautiful Colorado morning for clearing my head. Took a quick trip to the summit of Mt Evans Elev 14,258. A little bit crowded which should be expected on Labor Day but the views, as always, were spectacular. If you haven\'t made this trip, I would encourage it before the road gets closed for the season, based on snowfall. Had PhantomJock and Mrs PhantomJock over for dinner last night and he put the Mt. There were 13 of us ranging from around 21- 49 years young with the same goal of getting to Mike\'s Sky ranch within a day coming from Tecate Mexico.Although many of us did NOT know one another before this trip within the first few miles we realized how tight of a group we were. Alan got his first of 2 flats on his front tire after riding only about 5 miles and each of us in the group had some form of support, whether it stemmed from simple patience to lending a hand. After Alan got his second flat, no one had tubes or enough patches to fix the problem so Alan had no choice but to do the remainder of the ride (approximately 125 miles) with a flat. The amazing thing was that he kept up with everyone on his flat. The people in the group were beginning to worry what his capabilities were with a good tube and whether we would be able to keep up with him when the flat was repaired. Aside from the moral support that we had in common, we also each had a great appreciation for Tecate beer in common. We would make it a point to stop at virtually every beer stand however close or far apart they may have been and regardless of how good or bad of time we were making. (Which ultimately ended up being after dark.)This was necessarily a good thing for many reasons;1) It\'s dark in Mexico and we\'re not exactly close to civilization2) Alan having to ride on a flat 3) it turns out that Mark and Nick did NOT have any lights and had to ride near someone that did. Regardless, we all made it to Mikes Sky Ranch with smiles on our faces and dinner and Tecate beer ready for us when we arrived. and looking forward for what lye ahead returning back to Tecate the following day

Pittsfield State Forest - Part 2

September 20, 2008 – Pittsfield State Forest, Pittsfield Massachusetts
It was a perfect day for riding. Five bikes and three quads heading up to Pittsfield Massachusetts, a quintessential New England town lined with colonial buildings, white picket fences and American flags. The nostalgia was heavy in our hearts as Mark says, “There’s got to be a Dunkin’ Donuts around here somewhere!” And the day began…
McDonald’s will have to do. After all, it was 2 Egg McMuffins for $3. So I bought two for Rick and me, and Mark bought four. OK, he shared two with Brian and Craig. Keep up folks, there’s still two in the bag.
We get back in the trucks and continue our journey. I was anxious to get there and we hit every red light; I mean EVERY red light. Needless to say, I wanted to kill everyone in New England save my riding buddies. Craig felt the tension and kept the truck rolling at a good clip; too good of a clip to notice the five-o on the side of the road. Lights flash and we pull over.
A 300 pound Wolfman Jack crawled out of his cruiser. I say crawl because that is how he actually gets in and out of the car; using his hands and knees. The guys in the other truck were pissin’ their pants watching this cop. As he waddled up to the truck Craig thought, “Where’s that extra Egg McMuffin, we could bribe this guy!” The guilt from the back seat wafted to the front as the empty McMuffin wrapper crumpled and fell to the ground. Cheesy flakes of a McMuffin lined Marks grin. Nice. We’re screwed. After a quick warning, the officer crawled back into his cruiser and we moved along, of course continuing our red light winning streak.
We finally arrive, suit up and hit Balance Rock Trail and quickly see this freak of nature; a rock the size of a short bus perched on another smaller rock. Be sure to check out the pictures of that one. From there we hit Potter Mountain Trail and make it to the power lines where we caught some majestic views from a very high altitude. One bad turn here would be your last. Not knowing the trails well, we take the Potter Mountain Trail fire road back to the parking lot and find the trail head to Lulu Cascade.
Carl announces he needs to take a shit. Not good.
Lulu Cascade takes us to the middle of the state park where people hike and enjoy the nature. We don’t have time for that romantic shit. The trails are marked terribly and asking people for help is useless. After 10 minutes of trying to figure out where we were, we found the trail head for Churchill Brook Trail. “Oh no, not Churchill!” says Brian, “People don’t return from Churchill; loved ones and pets are never found once they enter this trail!” This invaluable information came from “the guys at work”. I am beginning to think that Brian works at Fashion Bug because we could have ridden unicycles over this trail. Anyway, we finally connect to Skyline Trail.
Carl reiterates his bowel issue. I have TP but he doesn’t bite.
Ah, finally a trail we know. We barreled down Skyline to C.C.C. Trail and to the parking lot from our first trip to the PSF. One thing to note here, we let Rick lead the way because we felt we were holding him back; and we were. Rick fell twice down Skyline and still had to wait 5 minutes for us to show up! I don’t think his front tire touched Skyline more than 10 times. Moving long, we hang out in the lot, hit some jumps and Bryan Roy does some logging. After a quick sip of water, we head out onto C.C.C. trail. These trails are familiar and as we ride, I know what is coming but I dare not tell the others. As we rolled around the memorable corner we came upon her; the Mother of all Hills, except now, she had been spayed, teeth removed and hands tied! Thank God for the trail crew of Pittsfield State Forest. We rolled right by her and smiled, recalling the joyous time we had there watching Mark’s “first in flight”.
We moved along and took a break, but for some reason we were missing a few quads. Carl and Bryan were no where in sight. Tony volunteered as the search party and came back with the news that Bryan was under water and needed a tow from Carl. Note to all, 700 pound quads do not float. Bryan must have forgotten to buy the pontoon option at the dealership, although he did have a winch which came in handy.
Back at the break location we all rounded up for a drink and a snack; except for Carl. Upon opening his lunch box there was no semblance of a sandwich; just a matted piece of tin foil and the pasty mess of what seemed to be chicken salad smeared all over three water bottles. Yet another priceless picture.
Carl has to crap. We are 20 miles from the trucks and there are no port-a-potties there anyway.
Skyline to Churchill and a wrong turn to Daniels Trail. Big pause here. No Carl, Bryan, Mark or Tony. Another big pause. Tony rolls up and tells us Bryan’s quad has overheated. Many moments later, the caravan shows up and Bryan is being towed by Carl’s Big Bear. Carl is about to take a Big Bear shit in his pants but grudgingly moves along. We all take Short Trail to the Potter Mountain Rd fire access road and fly back to the trucks.
We changed from our monkey suits, loaded the bikes, and relaxed with food and drink. Except for Carl, he had to crap and like his father, would rather drive another two hours for the comfort of his own commode. I would have crapped in a sandwich bag two hours ago, but that’s just me.
Trail Report
Dumps
Rick 2
Damage
Bryan: overheated. Most likely due to the pontoon ride muddying up the radiator

Six of us
met in Moab, Utah to ride the White Rim Trail.

Murph,
from Montrose, CO, driving a Toyota FJ

Paul,
from Inyokern, CA, riding a Kawasak KLX450

Tom, from
Idaho Springs, CO, riding a BMW GS650

Jerry,
from Long Island, NY, riding a Suzuki DR650

David,
from Searcy, AR, riding a Yamaha XT250

and yours
truly, Art, from Evergreen, CO, riding a KTM 525 EXC

All were
previously Naval Aviators many years ago, with a token Army grunt thrown in to
keep us out of trouble.

The White
Rim Trail, from our starting point, is a 100 mile loop mostly in the Canyonland
National Park. Our ride started on a
plateau at approximately 6000 ft elevation and reaching about 4000 ft in the
lower areas along the Green and Colorado Rivers. There is probably not a more scenic or
spectacular ride in the US.

The trail
itself is a jeep trail, along which we saw approximately 50 mountain bikes, 20
motorcycles, and probably 10 trucks/SUV's.
Most of the bicyclists do the ride in 3 to 4 days, supported by vehicles
with camping supplies and lots of water.
Our 100 mile loop took us 7 hours, with many sightseeing,
picture-taking, and water breaks.

From a
motorcycle rider's perspective, the ride is mostly easy, though heavier
"adventure" bikes would probably require experienced dirt
riders. There is some deep sand in
spots, and a couple rocky, steep climbs and descents. We rode the loop in a counterclockwise
direction, getting the more difficult areas behind us while we had the most
energy.

The drop
into the Green River side and the climb out of the Colorado River side are
probably the most spectacular areas. You
can get some sense of this from the photos, but the camera certainly does not
do the scenery justice.
