About Me
I've been backpacking and hiking for 20+ years, the last 15 in California (and am now a thoroughly spoiled weather wimp). I started the 00's moving from "just backpacking" to climbing and mountaineering but a variety of developments (some good, some not) changed that trajectory and I'm now trying very hard to both get back to backpacking shape and figure out how to make the next generation like the outdoors as much as I do.

My favorite outdoors places and memories are:
- a warm rock along the Tuolumne River right by Tuolumne Meadows;
- reaching Muir Pass and seeing that funny little hut at the top;
- camping in the moonscape beneath Junction Peak before climbing up Forester Pass;
- summitting Mount Rainier;
- taking a little boy backpacking at Point Reyes and hearing him say, "Let's go hiking!"

steverod reviewed the destination Jennie Lakes Wilderness on Apr 10, 2012

"A small and popular wilderness area near Sequoia National Park. On the bright side, the high country is easily accessible and there are no trailhead quotas, so you can always go somewhere. On the down side, no quotas means lots of people, plus access requires paying admission to the National Park (even though this isn't in the Park)."

"Pretty and green, by the Bay. It looks (and is) small but it has a lot of diversity within the park, and is especially nice in the spring when the hills are glowing green. Don't expect much shade. A bonus is the flower garden by the visitor center."
