lisacorley reviewed tommangan's guide Wildcat Canyon Loop at Rancho San Antonio on Apr 16, 2012

"I hike this every week. It is my favorite trail in Rancho. I especially love the Upper Wildcat Canyon. The Bay Laurel trees form a wonderful green cathedral along the creek.

Rather than hike back by way of the farm (which can get a bit tedious)I like to take the Farm Bypass - the Coyote Trail to the water tank and then drop down trough a meadow to the parking lot."

Mission Peak, one of the most popular East Bay hikes, is a great workout with 2,000 feet of climb in two miles and spectacular views of San Francisco Bay and the Diablo Range once you reach the summit. Most hikers take the so-called Hidden Valley Trail to the summit, but there is a far more rewarding path to the top along the Horse Heaven Trail.

Fifty-five miles south of San Francisco and the Golden Gate, a low, rocky, windswept point juts out into the Pacific Ocean. The Spanish maritime explorer Sebastian Vizcaino sailed by the point on January 3, 1603. His diarist and chaplain of the expedition, Father Antonio de la Ascension, named it Punta de Año Nuevo (New Year's Point) for the day on which they sighted it in 1603.

Perched in the midst of gorgeous San Francisco Bay, Angel Island State Park offers truly spectacular views of the San Francisco skyline, the Marin Headlands and Mount Tamalpais. The island is also alive with history. Three thousand years ago the island was a fishing and hunting site for Coastal Miwok Indians. It was later a haven for Spanish explorer Juan Manuel de Ayala, a cattle ranch, and a U.

lisacorley likes Big Basin Redwoods State Park on Apr 12, 2012

Superlatives define Big Basin Redwoods State Park in the Santa Cruz Mountains. California’s oldest state park - covering more than 18,000 acres from sea level to more than 2,000 feet elevation - launched the state park movement in California. Big Basin’s biggest attraction – literally – is a rare stand of awe-inspiring, ancient coast redwoods that are among the tallest and oldest trees on Earth.

Barely an hour’s drive southeast of San Jose, Henry W. Coe State Park – the largest state park in northern California - protects and preserves 87,000 acres of scenic hills and mountain ridges. This wild, largely undeveloped park welcomes backpackers, equestrians, mountain bikers, day-hikers, and anyone seeking solitude in a nearly untouched setting.
