Thanks for showing me this one. I saw it in the hikers guide and never understood topograph. Then I saw it on everytrail, thanks to google maps, and understood where people were going up.

@Rambokevil Yeah, glad you like it! Going up both the back AND front routes is definitely the way to go for the full experience! Looks like you have done a lot of hiking in Oahu! I highly recommend Ka'au Crater hike! So unique, beautiful, and fun!!! :-)

hmm, you mean the waterfall way, like the one you did? I've been hiking the fairly easy ones, as you may have noticed. Just give me the word, if you tell me "even a teenager can do Ka'au Crater up the waterfall!" then I'll do it. Seriously, if you saw some not too shabby people do this then I think I can too. Just need some motivation.

I actually saw a big group of high school-aged kids doing it, but regardless, I would recommend you have good stamina and balance before attempting the waterfall parts. The beginning trail section and the end ridge section are relatively much easier. As long as you can climb steep/slippery parts with the assistance of ropes you should be fine :-)

I did it yesterday. Same way as you did but I left my car at the park instead. All your warnings were right on. When blowhole sprayed water at me from the shrine side I was getting the jitters and the whole time I was hoping it doesn't rain. The trip is posted. I'll definitely do Kaau Crater later. I made of list of "not so life threatening" hikes I wanted to complete. lol

I did this loop few weeks ago but a slightly different version...
Park at the Koko Crater parking lot, walk through the gun range to the Highway. Go through the secret tunnel, go along the ocean (during low/mid tide) to the blowhole and scale up the ridgeline, down the railroad tracks. It was one of the most fun trails I've done so far. Little bit of amazing ocean, rock scamble & climbing. I did lose my hat along the ridge. be careful as it's really windy there.
