About Me
We're starting to train for a 4 day Inca Trail hike in 2012. We're new to hiking, but getting hooked on it. We bought some light hiking shoes, I got Merrell Moab Gore-Tex XCR's, and really like them. I would also like to get a good GPS device to track our hikes so we can upload to EveryTrail. Using my Android phone right now, which works great for shorter hikes, but want something more dedicated to hiking and with longer battery life. I'll update again when I'm not such a noob. :)
Update:
Finally decided to get a Garmin Oregon 450. I'm still learning how to use it. Now that I have a device with longer battery life than my smart phone, I'll have to re-hike some of our longer hikes so I can track and upload them here (like the Mt. Diablo loop). So far, I can make the device do what I want by clearing the current track before a hike and then saving the current track after the hike. Then I can upload the .gpx file to EveryTrail. I can also export a trip from EveryTrail and add the .gpx file as a Track on the device, but I haven't figured out how to overlay that track on my current track so I can see that I'm not straying from track that I got from another EveryTrail user. I still need to find a good solution for geo-tagging photos too. Still using my Android phone for that.
Update #2:
I found out a few weeks ago that Garmin Basecamp will geo tag my photos. I've used this 3 times so far and it works great. You just need to be sure that your camera's date/time is set correctly so that the software can match the photo to the correct coordinates. Basecamp then updates the photo's metadata with the coordinates. Unfortunately, I didn't find this out before I bought an i-gotU device that does the same thing. Now I bring both devices, so that I have a back up.
I wasn't entirely comfortable with the directions from this site. Additionally, in January there is A LOT of ice on the trail in the higher elevation. It was a little challenging to navigate but worth it!
@missfaline: Yeah, I think I remember we missed a turn along the way and had to back track a little. Glad you thought it was worth it too! And thanks for the heads up about the ice in January.
No worries. We figured it out. There were many friendly hikers on this trail, especially for January and they were helpful in guiding us. :-) Happy Trails.
