About Me
I am a retired high school biology teacher that loves the outdoors. I enjoy kayaking, biking and hiking as well as skiing in the winter. I live in Illinois but my heart is in Colorado. I own rental property in Frisco Colorado which is an outdoor paradise. I try to get out there each season for a week or two.
Thanks for sharing. I'm from Illinois and I'm planning a kayaking trip to Sarasota. I'm looking for nearby rivers to kayak. Do you recommend this river? Any others? Thanks.
dor2427 - Bonita Springs is about 1-1/2 hours from Sarasota. The Imperial is a great river to kayak but on its own its not worth the travel time. If you were in Bonita Springs area for other reasons I would suggest it. You can also kayak the Imperial from my set in point west to the gulf of Mexico and its about 5 miles for that route. Here's a sketch of the map for that trip http://goo.gl/maps/yVsr3 (no GPS coordinates yet)
Hey dor2427 I don't know if you made your trip to Sarasota yet but I am just finishing up a book on some great paddles around this area. it will probably be a month or so before it comes out but if you need any info before then email me at paddlesinparadise@gmail.com and I will be glad to give you some paddles.
Thanks Skypilot, I would appreciate any information. I will not be going to Sarasota until October so I would be interested in your book. Here's my email if you can let me know when the book is out. dor2427@comcast.net

Thanks for posting and adding so many beautiful pictures.
I am planning a 7 night kayaking trip to Sarasota next Oct. and I'm looking for rivers to kayak. This one looks like a keeper. The possibility of fossils is a plus.

Thank you for sharing your trips on Everytrail. Your photography is fabulous. Could you tell me what camera you would recommend I buy? I have been too lazy to bring a good camera but your pics have motivated me to take that next step. Thanks.
I carry two cameras... Olympus 720SW (shockproof and waterproof) camera and a Nikon D7000 with Nikkor 70-300mm zoom lens. The latter of which is carefully stowed in a dry-bag when I'm kayaking until ready to use because it is NOT waterproof.
There are too many wonderful cameras on the market today for me to recommend just one. It's more of a personal preference. Decide what you want in a camera. Are you willing to carry a heavy SLR with several zoom lens and a perhaps a tripod? Are you confident enough to risk taking it in a canoe or kayak? Do you prefer a hand-held point & shoot loaded with lots of specialized programs and tons of pixels? Paddling requires the use of both hands. I found my Olympus point & shoot works great on the water and it's always handy at a moments' notice. Have fun searching for the perfect camera. Honestly, all the new cameras today are so much better than the ones I use. Even cell phones can take awesome quality photos!
Keep the dry-side up.. :)
