I've been a travel specialist since 1987, combining travel writing with researching and advising on tourism policy development, legal aspects of travel and the consumer experience of tourism for a number of organisations including the UK Consumers' Association (where I was Head of Research and later Head of Department on the magazine Holiday Which?) and VisitBritain (the UK government agency that promotes Britain overseas), where I was Head of Policy, and for a number of parliamentarians from my home nation of Scotland.
My greatest expertise lies in Spain and its islands, and the constituent nations of the UK - particularly Scotland. I've also written extensively and repeatedly about the Republic of Ireland, Italy, Portugal, South Africa and the USA. In a career that's taken me from the Arctic Circle to New Zealand, I've also visited and written about Canada, Brazil, Barbados, Australia, Malaysia, Qatar, Israel, the Seychelles, Norway, Sweden, Denmark, France, Austria, Bulgaria, Malta, Greece and Turkey
