I hiked at El Corte de Madera Creek last spring, including the Resolution Trail. I had read about the crash site, and was curious to check it out. I read about the sandstone formations, but didn't want to backtrack to see both, so I stuck with the original plan to see the crash site.

I have to admit, I was expecting larger pieces of wreckage. We found a few scattered pieces here and there, and one area with some bigger pieces, but nothing huge. I guess for being out there for over 50 years, it's amazing that it hasn't been vandalized even more than it has. It seems for the most part, people respect the wreckage and leave things as they were. There was just one area a few feet off the trail where some parts had been stacked on a rock. I have a photo of the wreckage and an approximate location on my track:

Nice trip! I've got a guide for the Tufa trail around there that I need to get around to publishing.

Have you been down to the airplane crash yet, which I think is in the valley? Just wondering in case it's worth the trek.

Haven't been to the plane crash site -- I hear it's hard to find because they keep the details off the maps -- but someone must have posted GPS coords somewhere. I'd also like to know if it's worth it.

Aha .. the wikipedia page lists coordinates. But it also says this: "the crash site is part of the El Corte de Madera Creek Open Space Preserve, which includes the 'Resolution Trail', named for the plane. Park rules restrict visitors to the trail."
