An all-day effort (14 miles, 4800 feet gain and loss), but a classic hike with great views of LA. In winter it can be nice at the bottom, sleeting at the top, so be prepared. Many lovely shaded stretches when you are walking under the trees. At other times you are fully exposed on the ridges. Sign posts help, but study the route before you go.

Now is an ideal time to go. It won't be too cold at the top. Also, when I did the hike, I took a different route coming down. I went down the ridge that runs east off the top of Mt. Wilson. There is an established trail though I don't know if it is on trail maps. It is steep on top, then contours the slopes back down to Chantry Flats.
