8/10/08 I let my 14 year old son go with his Scout troop.
This is his first hiking trip in the Sierras.
Last month he went to Zion Narrows, two weeks prior to that he went white water rafting in the Kern.
He has gone to many camp outs but not the Sierras.
I am a little nervous because he is High functioning autistic, but he is a good young man with an excellent sense of humor.
I see your pics and it relaxes me that one day he too will be a man and I hope that he will continue to enjoy the magnificence of the outdoors into his "geezerhood"

We did this as a one-way hike: Started at Tenaya Lake and hike all the way to the Valley by way of Cloud's Rest. We spent the night at Camp Curry, then took the free Yosemite shuttle back up to Tenaya Lake. It's mostly downhill, so a bit hard on the knees, and landing at Camp Curry amidst the scent of pizza and the clamor of lots of campers wasn't great. Still worth it, though.

Answer to eYeks question: I drove up early morning from the Bay Area to the trail head. I started the hike around 9 am and reached the peak by 1 pm. I spent over an hour at the top as the weather was just too nice. It took me about 3 hours to get back to the trail head. After the hike, I spent the night at the Yosemite Bug which took about 2 hours to get to (with traffic).

Hiked this on July 4th 2010. The hike started with crossing a river, as the lake had extended across the trail head. We waded across the ice cold water (which was refreshing on the way back. Mosquitoes were very very persistent. Bring your strongest mosquito block, or netting.

This looks like a gorgeous hike, but I am not thrilled with narrow ledges and huge drop-offs! Just how narrow are the ledges? I did some of the ones in Zion where you have to cling to chains anchored into the walls and didn’t find that pleasant! We just briefly visited Yosemite and are already planning a return next summer but will probably just have one day to go hiking since we will be mostly be with someone who can’t walk much at all, so I want to pick a good hike with lots of granite and glorious views.

Hello Gretchen. The ridge leading to the summit of Clouds Rest and the summit itself is quite wide compared to the summit of Angels Landing in Zion. There are no chains leading to the summit as none are required. The summit is wide enough to comfortably accommodate many people. I had spent an hour up there basking in the sun, napping, snacking and chatting with other hikers. Check out eYeks post and pictures at http://www.everytrail.com/view_trip.php?trip_id=311378. We attempted this hike in June2009 but there was still too much snow to find the trail. My friends and I are heading up this next week. I do have a fear of heights too, but I made it up Half Dome so I hope to make it to the top of Clouds Rest too. Thanks for posting - I'll use your photos as a guide that I'm heading in the right direction! hahaha

Planning to hike Clouds Rest last week of May (2013). Hearing that Tioga pass is going to be open.

If you have or are planning to do this hike, can you please:

1. Give the general hiking conditions with specific mention about the level of snow pack late May
2. Tell me if crossing the lake at the outset of the hike is going to be ok.
3. Highlight anything else.
