Hello, Just a question about the PATH on this ET trip. I wondered if you drew it using ET tools or did your GPS or iPhone leave breadcrumbs and download them when you authored this trip?
But let me first introduce myself as one of your LoaR followers and say that I have already benefited from your earlier advice: I have an iPhone 4S, I have the TOPO app on the phone, and I have downloaded Half Mile's PCT and Eric the Blacks JMT waypoints successfully to my phone.
So, I will let you answer the question. I hope to find a way to use these techy tools to document wear I have been, not just locate where I am.
Thanks Again,
Dave.
PS. I didn't want to clog your blog so I asked here on ET.

Hello, very good question so I just added that info on my last blog entry, Backus Peak. I think this is what you are wanting. Let me know if I am missing something:
TECHNOLOGY OR WHAT I DO BEFORE A TRIP At home before a day trip or climb I download maps I will need using the Topo Maps app on my iPhone 4s. Then I add waypoints of important features like: the trail head, a ridge, and of course the top of the peak. The last one is really important because destinations are NOT always in sight from the trail head. When I get to the beginning of a hike, I then open my Everytrail app and let Everytrail track my trip during the day. I also take photos along the way within the Everytrail app and upload the trip when I get home. Magic. This only works for day trips because running a GPS program on my phone eats up a ton of battery. During the hike I also use Topo Maps app with the way points I added at home to navigate and fix on my location. It is simple and reliable. BTW: I always carry a paper map just in case my phone lands in water, gets dropped, lost, or dies.
