ATV/Offroading | 54 miles
Starting at Briceburg where Hwy 140 first meets the Merced River, this is a backcountry 4x4 trip on forest service roads into Yosemite National Park.  Along the way you'll ascend Burma Grade (1500' elevation gain in 5 miles along a switchback shelf road), travel through terrain that transitions from oak and manzanita to pines and firs, pass by Bower Cave, Pilot Peak fire lookout, and Little Nellie falls, ending up near Foresta...

Hiking | 5.9 miles
We spent the weekend with the Webelos Scouts at Pinnacles NM.  For our hike we went up Bear Gulch, along the ridge via High Peaks, and then back to the start via Condor Gulch:  lots of fun with a group of about 25 kids and adults.  Fortunately, the talus cave in Bear Gulch was still open.  I believe it was the last day to pass through before the annual closure for bat...

I've never hiked in Mount Diablo SP, and figured springtime green with all of the flowers blooming would be the perfect occasion.  Indeed, the flowers were fantastic, and along with the usual favorites, I got to see several less common species.  A group of 10 started the hike together, and then three of us split from the main group after a break at Deer Flat.  They were headed for the summit, while we...

With a work vacation day off, I decided to hike in Russian Ridge OSP.  The day started off foggy, but by the time I had driven up the the trailhead, the sun was shining brightly and promised a beautful day.  The trip starts out in the open grasslands that Russian Ridge is known for, but quickly descends into mixed forest: Oaks, Laurels, and Douglas Fir.  There are several springs on the west...

Hiking | 5.7 miles
Because of inclement weather yesterday, our Black Friday hike got postponed a day.  It was breezy and cool, but the views were fantastic.  It was impressive to watch the masive trees swaying the the breeze as it whooshed overhead.  The trail was damp, but not muddy.  There were lots of mushrooms sprouting along the trail.  We pretty much had the hike to ourselves:  only a couple of other groups passed us along...

A nice hike in the Belmont open space with my family to do cache maintainance. We took a side trip around Water Dog Lake, which turned out to be a bit of an adventure since the trail was very overgrown.
