Lake Superior Provincial Park - Sand River (Pinguisibi) trail
Frater, Ontario, Canada
Hiking | 0.8 miles
Hiking | 0.8 miles
a beautiful trail starts with a waterfall right at the trail head. The trail continues along the Sand River, past couple more waterfalls, rapids and quiet sections of the river. We did a short hike and return. The entire trail is about 6 km return along the river.
The train took 4 hrs from Sault Ste Marie downtown to Agawa Canyon Park. We only got 1 hr 45 mins to walk around the park. Hiked up 300 stairs to the lookout. Returned to the Talus Trail follows along the base of the canyon wall. This trail goes along the Agawa River to Bridal Veil Falls, and returning to the Black Beaver Falls.
This is a popular trail for fall colours. It winds through flat forests and climbs up to a ridge with two lookouts over the Killarney Park. To the south of the first lookout is Georgian Bay. To the north of the 2nd lookout is the spectacular fall colours of La Cloche Mountains.
If I have to rate the best short trail in Algonquin park, I think this is the one.Booth's Rock Trail starts one kilometre south of the Rock Lake campground office. It passes the small Respond Lake and Gorden lake before climbing up to the top of a large cliff, Booth's Rock, overlooking the beautiful Rock Lake. The last km is an abandoned railway leading back to the trail head.
3 hrs driving from Toronto to Frontenac Park, it has been more than 25 years since I first visited Frontenac Park for a 2-day canoe camp. After so many years, there wasn’t a trace of memory of how the park looks like. Today’s visit gave me a completely new experience, thus worth the 3 hours drive from Toronto.
I left home at 6am and grouping with friends together at the 401 service station...

Mist Trail to Vernal Fall, Yosemite
Yosemite National Park, California, United States
Hiking | 4.4 miles
Hiking | 4.4 miles
While my original plan was to take some nice pictures at Happy Isles capturing the motion of water flowing from Merced River cascading over a series of smooth granite rocks, the beauty of Mist Trail kept me walking all the way to Vernal Falls.
The Mist Trail is one of the most popular trails in the valley. It is the same trail that we can hike to the Half Dome. The trail...
Glacier Point offers one of the most spectacular views of the entire Yosemite Valley, including the Half Dome in the middle, North and Basket Domes on the left, and Mt Broderick and Liberty Cap on the right with the Nevada Fall.
The Glacier Point Road is a little windy and narrow, but is still ok to drive in the summer. The section of the road passed the entrance to the Badger Pass...
The drive from Yosemite village to Mariposa Grove was certainly worth the effort. Entering from the trail head of the Mariposa Grove, in the next 10 km walk, we were about to see some of the world tallest and oldest trees, although they are not necessarily the oldest (bristlecone pine: 4,600 years), tallest (coastal redwoods: 378 ft) and have the greatest basal diameters (Sierra redwoods: 310 ft). The giant sequoias I was...
Olmsted Point, Tioga Road, Yosemite
Yosemite National Park, California, United States

The Olmsted Point is a good place to have a feel of the glacial erratic boulders. Hiking down the short path of the slope of granite to a lookout, this is a good location to take some good panoramic pictures of the Half Dome miles away. Hiking back to the parking lot and towards the east side of the parking, we could see Tenaya Lake with Pywiak Dome in the background.
Tuolumne Grove, Tioga Road, Yosemite
Yosemite National Park, California, United States
Hiking | 3.3 miles
Hiking | 3.3 miles
From Merced, we entered the park through the Arch Rock entrance on Hwy 140, the Tuolumne Grove was our first stop inside the park. The Tuolumne Grove is one of the three sequoia groves in the park, the other 2 being Merced Grove and Mariposa Grove, that has magnificent giant sequoia trees that we have never seen before elsewhere. This is a short trail easy to access. Less than 2 km downhill...
This short trail offers something very unique from most of the other trails in the area; the majority of the trail is built on granites. The Gut Lake Trail, north of Parry Sound and south of Sudbury, illustrates a typical landscape of the Canadian Shield. These rocks were formed over 1 billion years ago and further shaped by glaciers moving over the earth’s surface. As the thick sheet of glacial ice moved over...
The last weekend of Sept is usually the peak of the fall colour in Algonquin Park. We were there on Sunday Sept 25, just a day before the park officially declared the colour at ‘peak’.
Having hiked most of the trails along the Highway 60 corridor, it is about time to finish the few remaining day hike trails. The Booth’s Rock Trail remains one of the few left for me.
It didn’t take too...
Killarney Park - 1 km hike from west side of La Cloche Silhouette Trail
Killarney, Ontario, Canada
Hiking | 2.1 miles
Hiking | 2.1 miles
The La Choche Silhouette Trail is a very long 100km loop trail starting either from the east or west side of the campground. It will take 7 days to finish the entire trail.
After finishing the two and half hours hike on the Cranberry Bog Trail and didn’t feel like walking to the park office to do the Granite Ridge or the Chikanishing Trails, Nijole and I decided to spend another hour...
It was pouring with rain the first night we were camping at the George Lake compound, the only campground designated for car camping. The remaining parts of this large park can only be accessed through backpacking or paddling.
The next morning, the sun started to come up when we were gathered at the trail head. This is a short 4 km loop trail accessed from the west side of the campground at site...
The Cheltenham Badlands is located on the Niagara Escarpment northwest of Brampton, near the villages of Inglewood and Cheltenham, Ontario. Hard to image this piece of 36.6 hectare badlands was caused by bad farming practices and overgrazing by livestock in the early 1900s, when the trees were cut down, and the protective layer of vegetation was removed, causing the very soft rock Queenston Shale to start eroding. Although farming at the site...
After leaving the Webster’s Falls Conservation Area (http://www.everytrail.com/view_trip.php?trip_id=1057574), we drove more than 60km south along QEW to the Ball’s Falls Conservation Area. From the parking lot, we walked along the Cataract Trail on the west side of the bridge to the Upper Ball’s Falls and returned back to the trail head. We then crossed the bridge at Twenty Mile Creek and hiked along the path passing the Historical Church and a barn,...
Spencer George (Tew's Falls) / Webster's Falls Conservation Area

Dundas, Ontario, Canada
Hiking | 2.0 miles
Hiking | 2.0 miles
Other than the well known Niagara Falls, there are hundreds of spectacular waterfalls at the cliff edges of the Niagara Escarpment. Today, the Easter long weekend, we made a day trip visiting Webster’s Falls, Tew’s Falls and Ball’s falls to take some pics.
The City of Hamilton, less than 100 km west of Toronto, has a population of 505,000 and waterfalls of 125. Webster’s Falls is one of the largest in the area...
Green River Bluffs Trail, Mammoth Cave National Park
Mammoth Cave, Kentucky, United States
Hiking | 3.2 miles
Hiking | 3.2 miles
Finished the 4 1/2 hours Grand Ave Tour at 3pm. Classified in the park brochure as ‘physically demanding’, this 4-mile hike inside the cave was far from strenuous as advertised. After finishing the tour, as we still had time and energy left, we decided to hike the Green River Bluffs Trail to log another 5 km before calling off a day.
We walked down the same path from the Visitor Centre to the...
