Though it was Winter Break, there were relatively few kids infesting the area. Lift lines were short, and conditions were good. A great day of skiing. For background on The Wall, check out this avalanche photo and this picture of the aftermath from 2007.Here's what Holiday Valley's website said about it at the time (quoted in T4T):"The Wall slope avalanched on Saturday afternoon, January 27, 2007. The
slope was closed and there were...
XC Skiing at Brecksville Reservation

Took in a great park with great cross-country skiing terrain. The snow was not so great, and there's none in the forecast. Dang; we need some snow!I saw a pileated woodpecker early in the trip; he was way too fast for my camera. You can see the official map of this park by clicking here. It's great for hiking, too.
Skied Boston Run Trail and then Haskell Run Trail. You can see the CVNP map of the area by clicking here. There were plenty of runners that morning, but nobody got in anybody's way and everyone got along fine.I got a track of the trails by tracing over a scan of the CVNP map; then, when I skied, I got the data at the source. With a cloudy day and some terrain,...
Ohiopyle Falls Festival and Middle Yough

Kayaking / Canoeing | 24 miles
The Ohiopyle Falls Festival has taken place annually since 1999. It's got a race and live music and stuff. Pretty cool, if you ask me.I headed that way this year, dropped the Falls a couple times on Saturday, then ran the Middle Yough, the Falls, and the (Lower Yough) Loop with Cliff. The Middle Yough is Class II—no great challenge for whitewater boaters. But it's great for race boats, and there was a...
Tinker's Creek is the best whitewater in Ohio, bar none. It's got wild technical whitewater, followed by some great surfing. And it's got Tinker's Falls and The Tunnel!, the latter of which is like nothing I've seen on any other river or creek anywhere. It's full of strainers and other pinning spots, so bring your "A" Game especially at higher water.Wanna read a story about Tinker's, with more photos? Kayaking on the Cheat Narrows

Kayaking / Canoeing | 4.6 miles
After running the Upper Yough (W. Maryland), I wanted to get a little more paddling in. (I also wanted to shakeout my piloting of my Wavehopper on a Class-III river, before seriously considering taking it on the considerably more difficult Cheat Canyon the next day.)I got there as it began to rain, at 7 PM. Some nice paddlers drove me to the putin, and I was able to finish well before dark.No...
Just a short workout on a section I hadn't been on in a couple of decades. Water was low, but the shallow parts were still (barely) navigable.Saw a family of Pied-billed Grebes, but didn't get a photo worth uploading. (It's tough to take a photo from a tippy boat.)
The second run of the Cuyahoga in wildwater boats with Cliff. With recent rain, it was running roughly 400 cfs, which mostly provided enough padding for our delicate boats.
Moose Fest began in the 1990's, a celebration of the release of water created by the Fall drawdown of the Fulton Chain Lakes. It has morphed from a Festival in Old Forge to a Party to a Celebration in Old Forge and Lyons Falls. In 2011, the Bottom Moose was very high, so many of us took on saner stretches such as the Class-IV Lower Moose, the Class-II(IV) Middle Branch Moose, and...
Took an overnighter on this stream in the Adirondacks. It's a run with a lot of flatwater, punctuated by nice rapids--and some gnar at the end.See the description of this stream in American Whitewater's national whitewater inventory.
Paddling Galveston Island State Park, 5/9/09

Kayaking / Canoeing | 7.2 miles
Bob and I rented a couple of sea kayaks and took advantage of a paddle trail set up at Galveston Island State Park. Protected from heavy surf by the island, this paddle trail allows easy flatwater paddling and birding.
Paddling Buffalo Bayou Paddle Trail
Hunters Creek Village, Texas, United States
Kayaking / Canoeing | 42 miles
Kayaking / Canoeing | 42 miles
Bob and I rented a couple of sea kayaks and checked out the soon-to-be-dedicated Trail. We chose what we thought would be a 17-mile stretch, putting in at Terry Hershey Park and taking out at Sabine Street, but it turned out to be almost 25 miles.Despite the fact that Buffalo Bayou runs right into the middle of one of the largest cities in America, the Trail is very scenic for much of...
Hiked the Loop Trail; at the parking lot, we had time to hike up the Gully, crossing the stream countless times until we couldn't go any further without getting very wet. Getting that wet is good for the summer, not so much for April.
Drove from the State Park to a spot on the beach and checked it out there. Nice place, though I bet it gets way crowded in the summer.
Brazos Bend State Park has several miles of trails and lots of wildlife--paprticularly waterfowl and alligators. I spent 2.5 hours there, and could easily have spent five.I didn't have my best camera with me; I jacked up the rez to get the best shots I could. Maybe the better camera will be along with me the next time...Updated! Now we have two days' hiking here: March 15 and April 4, with mo...
XC Skiing at Mendon Ponds Park, Quaker Pond Loop
Mendon, New York, United States
Cross-country skiing | 3.4 miles
Cross-country skiing | 3.4 miles
Update: I went back on Jan. 31, with the camera. The temps were in the low teens, with a strong wind and a wind-chill of ~0°F. Lots of skiers were out, despite the early hour. The track was in excellent condition. This trail, which follows the mostly-flat contours of Quaker Pond, is a lot easier than the East Esker Trail. On this day, the conditions were perfect: ~20°F and sunny, with 4" of...
Couple of shakedown hikes, getting the legs in shape for Tuckerman Ravine, later in April. The camera's timestamp was incorrect back then, so I'll try to locate the photos as best I can.
Paddling Flint Creek and Skiing Bristol Mountain
Orleans, New York, United States
Kayaking / Canoeing | 52 miles
Kayaking / Canoeing | 52 miles
After a snowy November and December, we got a warming trend with rain. Rain + heavy snowpack --> heavy snowmelt --> flood! So four of us hit Flint Creek (after it had dropped to a relatively sane running level of ~1600 cfs). It was the highest I'd ever run it. Double Drop was a sketchy rapid; we all decided to portage the bridge, because the high water meant that clearance under the...
Circumnavigation of Great Island

Kayaking / Canoeing | 24 miles
This trip includes five tracks from 2005 and '06: two circumnavigations of Great Island, two paddles up the Piscataqua River, and one little bounce around Portsmouth Harbor, off Goat Island, with my sister. The photos were taken with a film camera, so their locations are approximate.

Cross-country skiing | 5.8 miles
Mendon Ponds Park is another popular cross-country skiing locale for locals. It's used for cross-country races and training. On this day, I took the East Esker Trail loop, which has a few hills that make it one of the more challenging trails in the system.
