After all these years in the NW, it was time to check out MSH. It was a foggy morning, with light drizzle. We picked up our hiking permits at the Lone Fir Resort in Cougar, WA. The gal there was great - 6AM, and she was more awake than we were. When asked about how she felt having to deal with the stream of hikers, she said she didn't mind, until they...
A very nice, but slightly buggy trip. Yellow jackets very active at the summit, and not too bad on the rest of the trail. Wasn't stung, but wasn't allowed to rest much either.Saw more critters than all my other summer hikes combined. Six grouse, a few deer, and a really cute big fluffy owl, who seemed to want to follow me through the trees for awhile.
Pictures are from my Aug 22nd trip with Johnson, except for the trailhead and the view looking up at the catwalk.Aug 25 was a solo hike, so I avoided excessive exposure on the catwalk, and nobody else was on the trail all day. Good to be cautious when necessary.Weather was perfect - overcast, cool, and dry. I don't think I could do this hike any faster, unless I ran wherever I could. It...
An excellent thigh-burner without the killer Ruckel Ridge loop portion. I still had about 4/10 mile to go, but cound not continue due to traction issues, despite having hiking poles. It had rained hard the previous night, so traction was a problem most of the trail. Hiked on a Thursday morning, and never saw another person on the entire trip.
Not very much elevation gain, but after twelve miles of hiking on sharp exposed rock, I'm pretty beat!GPS recording only from turnaround point (Tunnel Falls) back to trailhead.Actual mileage was 12.2, five hours.
A nice hike with some water, some switchbacks, and some nice views of Hood and Adams on the best days. This trip was with hike mate Paul.
This solo event was pretty strenuous, and it was my first time using hiking poles. I must say, the poles worked very well, increasing my uphill speed, and I only had two minor slips coming back down. I'll continue to use them on the steepest hikes.Watch out for Devil's Club, which lines the trail for most of the trip. There were a couple of places where the trail was only a foot...
A easy romp past beautiful falls and creeks, and a nice lunch on a rock near Devil's Rest.DeEtta joined me on this hike.

Excellent hike, plenty of hard work near the summit. Note how the iPhone messed up the elevation numbers, but the elevation graphic looks correct.
