Swansea is a city built by the sea. It is Wales's second city and at one time, its major industrial port, importing copper and shipping out coal. The riverside has changed many times since "Sweyne" first settled on his "isle" in the middle of the river and gave the town its name.It used to be a centre of heavy industry . . . now some of the old redundant dockland has been transformed into...
" Loweswatercam " is on holiday this week as Ann and I travel down to South and West Wales. We had an invite to stay with friends which allowed us to catch up on current events, see old friends in the town we spent so much of our timeand of course to visit our son who has moved back and now lives and works in Swansea. On our first full day the weather was...
An afternoon stroll up to Rannerdale to see the flowers. The arrival of the famous bluebells has been delayed by the cold Spring weather. Perhaps the recent change of season has allowed them to catch up ?Full Pictures and report @ http://www.loweswatercam.co.uk/130517_Rannerdale_Bluebells_2013.htm
Our daughter wanted a weekend back home in the Lakes . . . and can she bring her friends ? . . . all five of them !The forecast was reasonable if not brilliant and many of them were in the Lakes for the first time. After a very sociable breakfast, a picturesque and classic walk at the head of the valley would be great for today.Full Pictures and report @http://www.loweswatercam.co.uk/
Another fine afternoon and another visit to St Bees to see what bird life was around. We had heard (unofficially) that there were puffins about so we live in hope. This time we parked at the farm and paid a reasonable parking fee of £2 to the farmer. From there it is an easy walk to the lighthouse and then the coastal path south to Fleswick Bay.Full Pictures and report @http://www.loweswatercam.co.uk/130427_St_Bees_South.htm
A longer walk to climb two major Lakeland fells in the Wasdale area. A second car saved a few miles road walking at the end of the day, which also gave us more time to savour this great walk on the high fells with a relaxed beer in the Wasdale Head as we finished the day. The section of the coast path from St Bees to Whitehaven is renowned for the colour of the farm fields, the sea cliffs and of the sea itself. We walk part of it on a short but circular outing to the Lighthouse and back along the cliffs. Full Pictures and report @http://www.loweswatercam.co.uk/130419_St_Bees_Colourful_Coast.htm
We had an email from two Loweswatercam viewers who were in the Lakes this weekso we arranged a get together with Nick and Sue and chose Rannerdale Knotts as a great afternoon walk to introduce them to our local fells.Full Pictures and report @http://www.loweswatercam.co.uk/130415_Rannerdale_with_Nick_and_Sue.htm
Ann joins her friend Brina, whom she last met in Calvert Trust several years ago. Together they take advantage of the weather to climb Carrock Fell, include High Pike in a round trip over in the Caldbeck Fells. The second of two lessons at Gosforth Pottery for me (a birthday present from my children) finds me dressing down to get dirty but Ann wrapping up to stay warm.I'm indoors at the wheel meanwhile my chauffeur takes time out by the lake again.Full Pictures and report @http://www.loweswatercam.co.uk/130408_Wasdale_and_Pottery.htm
Today's walk starts at perhaps the furthest away from home of any of our Lakeland walks. We met up with Jo at Rheged outside Penrith, and drove on down to Shap and then turned into Longsleddale to reach our start point . Clear blue skies above and a measure of snow on the tops gave the prospect of good walking ahead. Full Pictures and report @http://www.loweswatercam.co.uk/130406_Kentmere_Pike_and_Shipmans.htm
On Thursday Jo came over and, with Alan Kilduff, four of us set off to climb the Loweswater Fells which Alan hadn't done for a while. When when he did them last it was cloudy and he didn't see anything . . . hopefully today would be better weather for him. Full Pictures and report @http://www.loweswatercam.co.uk/130404_Blake_with_Jo_&_Alan.htm
A cooler day with fresher winds but, as ever, the dogs need a walk at some point during the day. The snow is leaving the lower fells so I thought a trip back up to Honister may be interesting . . . but this time on the opposite side of the valley from Dale Head. Full Pictures and report @http://www.loweswatercam.co.uk/130402_Frozen_in_Honister_Time.htm
The current winter high pressure continues . . . but the weather's better today with slightly more sunshine and slightly less wind.I had the opportunity to take the dogs for a longer walk and chose Dale Head from Honister. A great walk . . . and a fine cup of tea at Honister to round off the afternoon . . . just brilliant. Full Pictures and report @ http://www.loweswatercam.co.uk/130328_Dale_Head_in_the_Snow.htm
Today the snow has stopped and the sunshine makes a welcome appearance as Ann and I take a longer local walk, this time around Buttermere Lake. The snow on the fells should make the head of the Buttermere Valley even more picturesque. We found a parking space close to the Bridge Hotel which was very handy. Our friends John and Dee were in Keswick and invited us over for a shorter walk and lunch before they travelled back to Durham.Their dog Amber is thirteen and a half years old so can't manage big walks nowso we chose a shorter stroll down to the lake and then up onto Castle Head to enjoy an elevated view of the Keswick area. Full Pictures and report @http://www.loweswatercam.co.uk/130325_Keswick_and_Castle_Head.htm
Ed, Susan and Alex were in the Lakes for the day where they had an afternoon appointment at the Wedding Fayre. We arranged to meet them at Aira Force and join them for a shorter walk up to the waterfalls that Sue had never seen. All good walks are followed followed by lunch or suitable refreshment afterwards and today was no exception.First we have to drive there . . . and the road conditions...
Friday morning we woke to the sound of an easterly galeI set off for work but failed to get even half way down the valleybefore the snow drifts and road conditions made it obvious that travelling to Keswick was not a good idea.Next Day temperatures are still hovering around or below zero but it is the strong breeze that is the problem. Wrap-up-warm again time and off to Loweswater and Holme Woods to...
There's snow on the way for us but before it arrives we have a really sunny Spring equinoctial day.I'm in work on the 21st but Ann's out for a sunny walk on a local fell . . . but the following day later my journey to work was abandoned to the elements.Time for a few catch up jobs at home . . . like posting these photos ! Full Pictures and report...
The temperatures stay close or below freezing ... but when the sky clears as it is doing most days in the western Lakes at present the sun comes out and all is right with the world ... time for a walk. Today Sherran and Bill are over with us and the plan for this afternoon was a short-ish walk over to Angler's Crag. The report also feature a second walk with them two days...
