Flint river from Ryland Pike (Maysville) to Hays Preserve (Hampton Cove)
by matt76cj on Jul 09, 2011
Maysville, Alabama, United States
Kayaking / Canoeing | 15.2 miles
The group started out at the Publix in Hampton Cove.  We dropped a couple vehicles at the Hays Preserve and headed up to Ryland Pike.  The put-in was just below an abandoned church.  The water was down according to folks who had made the run before, but it was still moving along at a pretty nice clip.  It was a nice paddle thru a very beautiful section of the Flint River.  It...

Kayaking / Canoeing | 7.1 miles
Paddled the classic Cahaba Lily Run from Piper to River Bend. It's a little early for the lilies but there were still a lot of them. These pics were from the iPhone but I had my Canon with me. This shots will be on Picasa soon.

South Sauty-Morgans Cove up to Bucks Pocket
by matt76cj on Mar 19, 2011
Pendergrass (historical), Alabama, United States
Kayaking / Canoeing | 3.8 miles
I put in at the boat launch at Morgans Cove. After paddling across the cove I entered South Sauty Creek. Paddled up the creek a bit passing the primitive camping area for Bucks Pocket SP. Finally I got to where it turned whitewater and narrowed a good bit. I portaged a short ways around a strainer and paddled up a bit further. Got out and took some pic of the whitewater....

Kayaking North Sauty Creek
by matt76cj on May 22, 2010
Scottsboro, Alabama, United States
Kayaking / Canoeing | 6.4 miles
North Sauty is a beautiful creek on the northern edge of Lake Guntersville.  Not to be confused with South Sauty on the southern side of the lake which is primarily known for it's Class III-IV rapids, this is no whitewater creek.  North Sauty begins as a marshy, almost swampy flat that narrows into intertwining water passageways full of wildlife and woodland meadows.  We started just off of U.S. Highway 72 at a...

Guntersville Dam to Madison County Marina
by matt76cj on May 15, 2010
Ferns Quarter (historical), Alabama, United States
Kayaking / Canoeing | 15.0 miles
We left out of the Guntersville Dam parking lot around 10AM.  We followed the Tennessee River about 15 miles passing the mouths of the Paint Rock and Flint rivers.  This was an excellent run with very little flow in the river.  We saw lots of wildlife including buzzards, a beautiful yellow lab and a dying raccoon.

Kayak Trip to the Bat Cave on Lake Guntersville
by matt76cj on Apr 29, 2010
Guntersville, Alabama, United States
Kayaking / Canoeing | 7.0 miles
The group left out from the boat launch at Whitaker Lake (behind the condos) at about 5:45pm.  The wind was fairly choppy as we headed out through Honeycomb.  It was a strong 10-15 mile headwind.  When we rounded the bend near Pumkin Hollow, Jeff spotted a cross on the bank.  He went to investigate, but didn't find any markings other than the cross itself.  There was a fair amount of water cascading...

Kayak & Hiking trip up Short Creek after huge rain
by matt76cj on Nov 11, 2009
Alder Springs, Alabama, United States
Kayaking / Canoeing | 8.0 miles
I have kayaked Short Creek from Lake Guntersville State Park several times, but it had always been in the summer or when it was fairly dry.  Normally, the creek becomes dries up after a couple miles and ends in a slight trickle of water flowing through the rocks.  After three days of hard rain, Veterans Day 2009 turned out sunny and beautiful.  I decided to paddle up Short Creek, bring a change...

Nelson's Gap Section of the Locust Fork
by matt76cj on Oct 18, 2009
Walnut Grove, Alabama, United States
Kayaking / Canoeing | 7.2 miles
Nelson's Gap is a very unique place on the Locust Fork (Warrior) River.  As the river cuts the gap in Sand Mountain, it appears that the river actually flows uphill.  While this is a neat topographic anomaly, it creates some beautiful scenery, especially in the fall.

Guntersville Dam to Shoal Creek and up (6.5 miles)

Kayaking / Canoeing | 6.5 miles
Incredible trip!  The day was just too pretty not to get out and do something so I took off around 1:30pm and headed to Guntersville Dam with old blue.  Some friends had made this trip a few weeks ago and spoke very highly of it.  Kayaking the Tennessee was ok, the dam was releasing so there was a little current.  I went up one tiny little inlet thinking it might be Shoal...

Teaching Maggie to kayak
by matt76cj on Jul 24, 2009
Guntersville, Alabama, United States
Kayaking / Canoeing | 3.8 miles
I've been teaching my chocolate lab Maggie how to get into and out of the kayak without causing me to capsize.  I took her for a short little paddle this morning form the harbor to Signal Point Marina.  She rode the kayak well most of the time.  I threw her off a couple of times and let her swim.  When we got to the marina she jumped out on her own and...

Flint River from Hays Preserve
by matt76cj on Jul 19, 2009
Huntsville, Alabama, United States
Kayaking / Canoeing | 4.3 miles
Seven of us started from the parking lot of the Hays Wildlife Preserve near Hampton Cove.  We had heard that the river was blocked upriver but tried that route first.  About a quarter mile upriver it was blocked with a major log jam.  So we turned around and went back downriver passing our put-in point and then went under the 431 bridge. The river didnt seem very fast until we tried to go...

Short Creek at Dusk (Thursday Evening Paddle)
by matt76cj on Jul 16, 2009

Kayaking / Canoeing | 5.5 miles
Matt, Dan, David and Jeff met at the Short Creek boat launch at 5:30 to resume the Thursday evening paddle tradition.  This was my first trip with the group, but I was happy to play the part of the trip recorder.  We saw an eagle a couple of times, but I couldnt get the camera out of the dry bag in time.  Went up as far as you can paddle before the...

Town Creek - Lake Guntersville State Park
by matt76cj on Jul 01, 2009
Poplar Springs, Alabama, United States
Kayaking / Canoeing | 5.5 miles
Took off from the Town Creek store at the Lake Guntersville State Park.  Went up about 2.8 miles and then booked it back.  I have been eyeing this trip for a while.  Had to turn back due to time constraints.  Left at around 6:45AM and got back about 8:35AM.  Next time I go I am going to allow more time so that I can get up to the first set of shoals...
