Canyoneered down Keyhole and Pine Creek Canyons in Zion National Park with Brandon Lindsey, Marisa Peterson, Kevin Meyers, Matt Morris, and Bryan Aitchison. Lots of awesome slot canyons with stinky water and a final huge free-fall rappel.
Co-Organized a Meetup Group for a hike / scramble in the Calico Hills area, starting from the Kraft Mtn parking lot, Red Rock Canyon, Las Vegas, NV. We scrambled up Calico Hills, along the top, thru some slots, and down a rope climb.
Went with a Meetup group to Frenchman Canyon for a night descent. Yes, we deliberately rappelled down a canyon at night! Just like with a trail while mountain biking...an average canyon by day, becomes a great experience at night. The Vegas skyline photo ops added another dimension as well.
Went to Hidden Canyon on a Canyoneering Meetup event organized by Kevin. The approach and exit were rather hot, since they were in the sun, but the canyon itself was very comfortable even in 95 degree temps.
Went exploring with David, did the slot that injured Eva, found a spot goof for a rope down climb, came down a difficult slab in crab mode!
Went canyoneering down the Middle Fork of Lytle Creek with Brandon, Marisa, and Bryan. It is a great canyon in the San Gabriel mountains in California. There were five really fun rappels, each with water falls and pools of water at the bottom...needless to say, we got very wet, but that was part of the fun!
I went scrambling with a Meetup group in the Calico Hills area, near Red Rock Canyon, Las Vegas, NV. We explored several cool slots along the way, as well as, went to the top of the peak (no name) across from Calico Tanks Peak. Some stats:Length: 4.2 miles Duration: ~5 hoursClass: 3 (mostly) and 4 (some)Vertical up: 2356.2 ftVertical down: 2165.3 ft
I went canyoneering with Brandon, Kevin, Bryan, and Marisa to Secret Canyon, also called Cottonwood Canyon in the Lake Mead area. The canyon ends at the Colorado River, just across the river from Gold Strike Canyon. There is a "hot" spring that feeds into the Colorado...but, sometimes it is not so hot. We swam the frigid water to the edge of the Colorado for a view...problem was, we had to swim back...
Brandon, Kevin, and I went canyoneering down Styx Canyon (North Fork) in Death Valley. We did this in one day...2.5hrs drive there, 1hr shuttle placement, 11hrs in the canyon, 1hr shuttle retrieval, 2.5hrs drive back...total time - 18hrs, canyon experience - priceless! Some stats on the canyon below:Time Required - 9 to 11 hoursDistance - 6.4 Total, 4.4 miles TechnicalRappels - 16 Rappels, Longest Rappel 105 feet.Elevation Range - 5280 to -170...
Brandon, David, and I went canyoneering down Hidden Canyon in the Summerlin, Las Vegas area. It was David's first canyon and he did fine.
Kevin and I canyoneered down Secret Canyon. It ends at the Colorado River on the AZ side, with some warm pools of water to soak in. They weren't too warm today since the river was elevated for whatever reason, but we tried them out anyway...brrrr. The canyon is really an out and back, where you have to ascend up the last rappel and up-climb the remaining, with the first rappel avoided by...
Four of us went canyoneering down Antenna Canyon just south of Jean, NV. It had 7-8 rappels with the last one at about 160 feet (although there was a ledge in the middle). All in all a fun canyon not too far from home.
Six of us Canyoneered down Motorcycle Canyon in the Lake Mead area. Look at the pictures to figure out why they call it that!
Canyoneered down Hidden Canyon with Brandon and Bryan. Along the way we practiced lowering someone from a figure eight anchor tie and ascending...got a chance to try my new Ropeman MK II ascenders...worked great!
Three of us tried a little known canyon called Toad Pool Canyon, which runs down the red rock just in front of the Calico 1 pull-off on the Red Rock Canyon Scenic Drive. Its interesting that this canyon traverses many of the hiking routes in the area. For example, Suspension Slot is in between rappels 3 and 4...go figure!
Brandon, Tobi, Angie and I went scrambling in the Calico Hills area, starting and finishing from the Sandstone Quarry stop on the Red Rock Natl Recreation Area Scenic Drive. On our hike we went to several overlooks, slots, and the Hidden Arch.
Brandon and I explored some alternate routes in the Calico Hills area.
Hiked with the Vegas Hikers Meetup group in the Calico Hills area of Red Rock Natl Recreation Area. We started from Red Springs by going up Guardian Angel Pass, then up the hills to the southwest, along the ridge, and back down to Calico Basin.
Tobi and I went to Joshua Tree Natl Park to scramble in and around Rattlesnake Canyon and The Wonderland Of Rocks.
We (Jeff, Brandon, Marisa, Bryan, and Kevin) went canyoneering in Death Valley, down Purgatory Canyon. The approach started at Dante's View, went along the northern ridge line and past several other canyons. We did over 17 rappels and many difficult down climbs, in a little over 13.5 hours, with 4 of those hours in darkness!
