You can read my full description of the hike here. I should mention, it is best to drive the first portion of this journey. Turn off of Route 6 onto the dirt road. Most two wheel drive cars should make it to the main mine entrance. From there, the hike begins. http://climbinghighwithbrian.blogspot.com/2006/10/boundary-peak-nv.html

My good friend Bonker was in town so I thought I would show him some Florida hiking. I had heard of Bull Creek Wildlife Management Area and wanted to go. We weren't quite ready to do the entire loop trail, so we decided to the northern section of the trail and loop around on some of the roads, making sure to visit the Crabgrass Cemetery. There is a nice...more

This area has a little bit of everything, old cabins from the 19th century, old cemeteries, a mountain creek, a 200 ft waterfall, and some wonderful hiking trails.  Unfortunantly, the waterfall was running a bit dry due to a drought in the are, but the gorge is still beautiful.  Animal Count: 7 deer, 2 turkeys

Brushy Mountain is located just north of Roanoke in the Carvins Cove Recreation area.  There were three reasons I had for this hike.  First, Carvins Cove is a huge recreation area with lots of trails and I wanted to check it out.  Second, Brushy Mountain is tied for being the 90th most prominent mountain in Virginia with 1028 feet of prominence.  I like lists, so I thought I would check a mountain...more

Several of my family members decided to ascend Mt. Washington while in New Hampshire for a wedding.  We took the Auto Road to almost the summit.  The last 20 feet or so you have to go by foot, but it was no cake walk.  50-60 mph winds and cold temperatures made the summit quite exciting.  Those winds are nothing compare to the record breaking 231 mph wind speed that was recorded in...more
Roanoke River and Mill Mountain Greenway
by whitedbc on Apr 05, 2009
Roanoke, Virginia, United States
Road biking | 12.4 miles
Roanoke is in the process of building a greenway system throughout the city.  I parked downtown near Elmwood Park, where the Mill Mountain Greenway, currently begins.  I traveled this greenway that connects with the Roanoke River Greenway.  I then road the length of the Roanoke River Greenway.  There are plans to extend the Roanoke River Greenway even farther in both directions.  The only other thing worth mentioning is that there is a...more

Well, this backpacking trip was supposed to be a fun-filled weekend with my dad on the AT.  Unfortunantly, in the first half mile, my dad fractured his ankle and couldn't go on.  I took him back to the car, he headed to the ER and I headed back on the trail.  The remaining trip went well.  There are not a lot of spectular views on this section.  I did see some birds...more

Humpback Rocks is a set of nice rock formations that gives a great reward with a little bit of effort.  The parking area is off of the Blue Ridge Parkway.  There is a short, but steep rocky trail that leads to the summit, for those looking for the quickest route.  I took a blue-blazed trail that connects to the AT.  Go north on the AT until you reach a sign for the...more
