Kayaking / Canoeing Guides and Trips
Trips
With only a few hours before the big meal, I geared up for a short paddle on the reservoir. Turned out to be a warm day on the water though I was still glad to be in my wet suit which as the paddle progressed became a sweat suit.
One of my favorite places to paddle. Only a young couple walking the trail for company. No ice and the sun was warm enough I had to shed my sweater. The track back to near the landing was to look for my spray jacket which at the point I turned around, I realized I had not stashed it in one of my compartments though it was in my hand when I left...
Though the track stops at the Lefferts Pond access, this must have been where my iPhone ran out of power as I did make it back to the starting point in the boat!
Short AM Trip on Chittenden Reservoir

Perfect weather with blue sky. A Sunday morning trip on Chittenden Reservoir before the crowds arrived. Several cars with kayaks headed for the reservoir went by us on our way out.
Though sprinkling rain, it was a cool day to get out and take in some early fall foliage at Chittenden Reservoir.
A windy start at the landing had us bundled up in wind shells over many layers as the temperature was only in the 40's. After crossing the marshy south end of the lake we found some relief from the wind with cliffs and trees to shield us. In fact the sun soon warmed us so much that hats and gloves came off. It appeared that the whole lake warmed up and calmed...
Lots of water in Dead Creek this time. Birds were in the air in great numbers though none near us, probably due to the bird hunters sharing the water. We heard shots near us. The water became glassy still as the evening progressed and the sunset on the clouds became spectacular. The calm and peaceful atmosphere was a stark contrast to the first time I paddled here (see earlier Kayaking on Dead...
In hopes of paddling Somerset Reservoir we drove the 100 miles to the put-in and found the wind so strong that paddling seemed impractical so we opted paddle a small reservoir we saw at the beginning of the dirt road to Somerset. The beautiful day and the autumn colors made for a nice, though too short, paddle but at least we got the boats wet!
An amazing trip in Vermont wilderness.
Since we ran out of time on the last Glen Lake trip I'm calling this trip "Long".Most notably on this trip was meeting two seasoned kayakers who gave us some ideas on future trips. They were teachers who bring kids to lakes with them and teach them that there is more to do at lakes than party. The sometimes help the Nature Conservancy pull noxious aquatic weeds. What a great way to...
Badly needing a break, we took to the waters of Chittenden Reservoir. There we found waves, a loon, and many swimmers cooling off on a hot day.
We launched in great sunny weather though the forecast was for thunderstorms so not many other boaters on the reservoir. Paddling our boats toward the middle of the reservoir, we found some fairly strong wind as we rounded the point so turned our boats into it and towards some camp sites we had located on an earlier trip. We stopped off at a day camp that had a nice pebble beach and...
A great sunny afternoon. Joanne joined me for a paddle around Lake Ninevah.
A late start for a kayak trip on Chittenden Reservoir but I was determined not to miss such nice weather for kayaking. Ahh, the water level was way up since I last saw it. I carried my boat from the parking lot to the water because backing the trailer right to the water seems like a longer process.i dropped the boat in followed by me into the boat and started out CCW....
The straight piece of track is where I put my rudder down. The piece of track where I floated away from shore is when I was just drifting while talking to a New Hampshire friend on the phone. A little hazy but the temperature was perfect.
A short early morning paddle. Ice on the lake where there were lilly pads. Sorry the photos were not taken with my regular camera. They are hazy because I used the iPhone camera through the waterproof bag I use on the water. I tried out the recording app as I crunched through ice. Hear it here: Â Paddling Sounds
Some of the photos get cropped in the slideshow but you can see them larger in the "see all pictures..." link at the end of this story. It was a rainy afternoon to start out but I was long over due on paddling so I pulled on rain gear and set off for Chittenden Reservoir. Just as I put in, a curious loon was inspecting me as I secured my spray skirt. I...
A beautiful sunny day to paddle. It being a Saturday, quite a few others had the idea to paddle on Gale Meadows Pond too. We saw quite a few boats we hadn't encountered before. I didn't get to watch them in action but some pedal canoes looked pretty interesting. Then there was a home made racing kayak made of wood with a cockpit barely larger than a paddler's waste. Another had an...
