(Surprisingly) Beautiful Monte Bello OSP
by dano23 on Mar 27, 2011
Vista Verde, California, United States
Hiking | 2.9 miles
Now, I know all the Monte Bello regulars will scoff at me when I say this, but I've always had assumptions about this place. I assumed it was a poor man's Russian's Ridge -- which is to say exposed and wind-blown but also hot and crowded. I am pleased to say that my assumptions were wrong and I should have visited MB OSP long ago. While the place does get its share...

Am I Hiking Russian Ridge Or The Scottish Highlands?
by dano23 on Jan 29, 2011
Vista Verde, California, United States
Hiking | 5.2 miles
I've hiked Russian Ridge before and I've hiked the Scottish Highlands before and what I love about Russian Ridge is how closely it resembles a Scottish ramble. I almost expect to see a bloke in a kilt blowing pipes on the ridgetop. This time around I chose to start from the Alpine Road parking lot (plenty of parking and a potty) and head out on the Bay Area Ridge trail before taking...

Purisima Creek Harkins Ridge To Whittemore Gulch
by dano23 on Jan 15, 2011
Grabtown, California, United States
Hiking | 5.8 miles
Purisima Creek Redwoods is one of my favorite local spots to hike because along the creek you get densely packed vegetation and creeks and well maintained trails. Not much wildlife because it's a popular spot for hikers, but the flora can be nice. It's always a go-to spot for me when in the summer because it's always cool and shaded. But this is because I've always meandered up the middle or around...

El Corte de Madera Creek OSP
by dano23 on Aug 29, 2010
Woodside, California
Hiking | 3.8 miles
This is a popular spot for mountain bikers but hikers will have a fund time here too. It was late-August when I did this trip and the temp was 64 degrees, the trail shaded and whenever you stopped you heard the drip, drip, drip of moisture from the trees.  The moist trails (yes, even in late-August) kept the dust down, which makes co-habitating with the mountain bikers that much easier. El Corte...

Summertime Sam McDonald
by dano23 on Aug 14, 2010
La Honda, California, United States
Hiking | 4.9 miles
Mid-August up in the Sam McDonald meadows is very different from early spring. Last March I saw bobcats and fox all chasing mice around green grassy fields. Now the grasses are brown and most of them have been mowed down, giving the place a more suburban feel. But scoot out of the meadow into the Brooke Trail loop and you'll be mostly shaded and in for some great summertime hiking. I chose...

A Phleger Estate loop full of surprises
by dano23 on Aug 01, 2010
Redwood City, California, United States
Hiking | 8.0 miles
Two firsts for me on this trip. One, just bought a DSLR so this is my first trip with the bling camera, and two, saw my first mountain lion. Unfortunately #1 and #2 did not intersect. But it was a great trip nonetheless. I headed out to Phleger Estate via Huddart park and the Crystal Springs Trail. I took Miramontes to Mount Redondo and decided to cut up Lonely Trail. As always...

Searching for Big Blue in Monterey Bay
by dano23 on Jul 13, 2010
Monterey, California, United States
Boating | 31 miles
I read a story in the Chronicle on Sunday that there were these huge blooms of krill in Monterey Bay that had attracted Blue Whales to the area by the dozens. According to the story, it had been about ten years since the last Blue was spotted in the Bay, so I had to get out there to see if I could spot them myself. And spot them we did. We headed...

An down and up through Upper Stevens Creek
by dano23 on Jul 05, 2010
San Lorenzo Park, California, United States
Hiking | 5.4 miles
The day started out foggy and cool, but it didn't last long once you hit Santa Clara County. But not a big deal, this hike through the Upper Stevens Creek area is well-shaded and fun any time of year. I started on Skyline and dropped down table mountain trail, a designated hiker-only trail. At least that's what it's labeled on the map -- but clearly the mountain bikers love it. But it...

Hiking | 5.0 miles
This is a nice hike and I'll write about it in a minute, but, just FYI this was a test run for me on my new HTC EVO 4g -- I'm trying to test the camera usefulness. Now, I know camera aficionados will roll their eyes at this -- but I was actually able to get some decent shots out of my old Touch Diamond*, and it was just so darn convenient to...

A walk around Horseshoe Lake with the girls
by dano23 on Jun 27, 2010
Vista Verde, California, United States
Hiking | 1.4 miles
We decided to take in the warm air on Sunday and go for a stroll around this small lake located just off Skyline in the Skyline OSP. Plus, I wanted to try out my new EVO Android phone and give the EveryTrail app a go. One quick comment on the App: I tried using the camera on my phone and I had a really had time getting it to focus on everything....

A Sunny Spring Hike Around Bald Knob
by dano23 on May 23, 2010
Grabtown, California, United States
Hiking | 5.8 miles
I did this hike last August while the Lockheed fire raged around Bonny Doon. The resulting view was hazy at best, and downright unseamly at worst. Today was a different story, however. It was a beautiful Spring day and the ocean views went on forever. Hopefully my camera does the view justice. I included a video of the panorma to give you a better sense for the bigger picture.A few wildflowers remained....

Skyline Ridge OSP Loop-D-Loop
by dano23 on May 09, 2010
Vista Verde, California, United States
Hiking | 4.8 miles
I was trying to figure out where to go hiking -- a last minute sort of thing -- when I came across Skyline Ridge. To be honest, I wondered how great an Open Space could be so close to Highway 35. I mean, the place was practically named after a highway, right? I figured it would be full of crazies and locals (ahem, like me) and would feel downright touristy. Was I...

A Family Hike Down Purisima Creek Trail
by dano23 on May 02, 2010
Grabtown, California, United States
Hiking | 2.3 miles
One of our favorite spots to bring friends and kids and families the Purisima Creek trail is wide, mostly flat and full of gobs of interesting things to see. Today my two girls and I went out exploring with some great friends of ours. They have two daughters about the same age and were looking for an excuse to get out and explore. We started this hike with a quick review of...

Berry Creek Loop, Big Basin
by dano23 on Apr 24, 2010

Hiking | 9.4 miles
I'd never been to Big Basin before, so this whole trip was new to me. But I'd heard good things. I was a little worried at just how crowded it was when I arrived -- but those worries would soon fade.I arrived around 10:15am and had to park waaaaay down in the extra reserve overflow parking for dummies area. But not a big deal. I jumped on the Skyline trail just across...

A Loop Hike Around Windy Hill South
by dano23 on Apr 10, 2010
Portola Valley, California, United States
Hiking | 8.0 miles
This is a good hike to knock out if you're short on time and don't want to waste time driving. You still get great scenery, some wildlife, weather, and more and yet you can launch just outside of Portola Valley. But on the flip-side you'll see a lot of people and hear some road noise once you near Skyline.Last time I hiked Windy Hill it was pushing 90 degrees and sunny and...

Exploring the Backside of El Corte De Madera Creek OSP
by dano23 on Feb 13, 2010
Grabtown, California, United States
Hiking | 7.9 miles
Take Skyline to Swett Road to Star Hill and you'll com across CM08, aka the back-side of El Corte De Madera Creek OSP. I wanted to come at the park from a different angle, since most start their adventure from Skyline and drop in. For this trip I looped from Methuselah > Giant Salamander > Lawrence Creek > Virginia Mill > South Leaf and back to Methuselah home. Trail conditions were good....

An Early Spring Loop Around Pinnacles
by dano23 on Jan 01, 1990
Pinnacles, California, United States
Hiking | 8.9 miles
This trip is worth it for the drive alone. Highway 25 south of Hollister is prime California pasture-land, vineyards and farms at its best. Pinnacles is a treat any time of year, but springtime is best for wildflower hunting. I made the trip on a cool day, just after the rains, and saw a lot of color. If it's Springtime, get to Pinnacles! I love the high-alpine feel of the park --...

Exploring Purisima Creek OSP with Little Kids
by dano23 on Mar 06, 2010
Grabtown, California, United States
Hiking | 2.1 miles
This is a great little walk to take with kids. It's flat, wide open and there's a lot to see. Plus it's very wet and shaded so you really don't need to worry about sunscreen or sun exposure. You'll see a year-round creek, huge redwoods and doug fir, the occasional deer and a lot of plants. Flowers in the spring. We usually play a game that involves counting the number of banana...

A Soggy Hike Around the Fire Roads of Pescadero Creek CP
by dano23 on Feb 28, 2010
Loma Mar, California, United States
Hiking | 7.8 miles
The fury of El Nino can do great things for forests -- it knocks down the weak trees, stirs up the forest bed and brings a lot of life to drought-thirsty hillside. But it also mucks up your hiking trails. Sick of getting turned back on single-track hikes plugged up with tree-falls I decided to explore the wide open trails of Pescadero's fire roads. I am pleased to report that it worked....

I'm only posting this trip so that anyone thinking of embarking on the epic 13 mi. hike to Peters Grove in Portola Redwoods State Park knows to wait. The trail is blocked. What a bummer. Thanks for nuthin' El Nino! Will remove this when we get word that the trail is clear.
