Cycling - Cleveland, OH, by Towpath
by ant1606 on Nov 11, 2012
Brecksville, Ohio, United States
Mountain biking | 47 miles
Cycling  -  Metropolitan Cleveland, Ohio, has many green areas to enjoy. One of these is the Cuyhaoga Valley National Park which lies around the homonym river. In addition to a good number of walking trails through the woods, the Towpath was once used to move boats up stream the Ohio and Erie Canals. Partly paved, mostly gravel, this is a favorite for cyclists and this track covers a portion of it (from...

Cycling & Walking - Byron Bay
by ant1606 on Aug 17, 2012
Byron Bay, New South Wales, Australia
Mountain biking | 8.5 miles
Cycling & Walking - Byron Bay's promontory is the easternmost point of mainland Australia and hosts a nice lighthouse. We took advantage of free bicycles for use at our B&B accommodation. Testing the ups and downs on a fixed gear cruiser bicycle was quite interesting but not as much as having to deal with the poorly working coaster brake and the broken front brake. The promontory loop trail includes staircases and we...

Pawleys Island, South Carolina, United States
Mountain biking | 17.5 miles
Cycling - Compact fine sand inspires beach rides in Pawleys Island, South Carolina, just south of Myrle Beach. The first part up to the breakwater at Murrels Inlet was into a 30 mph constant wind, which made the way back effortless.

Buzios, Rio de Janeiro, Brazil
Mountain biking | 9.7 miles
Cycling - Armação dos Búzios is a quaint little town sitting on the tip of a small hilly peninsula and surrounded by numerous beaches. Rental bicycles are a good option to move around although some stretches of road are really steep and exposed to the scorching sun.

Cycling - Fossil Forest
by ant1606 on Mar 28, 2010
Torino, Piedmont, Italy
Mountain biking | 29 miles
Cycling - Ride to a rare fossil forest lying on the banks of the Stura river. This extraordinary site was exposed in year 2000 when abudant rainfall had the swollen river to carve the limestone sediments that preserved large tree trunks and stumps for three million years. These are Glypostrobus Europaeus, now extinct, kin to the North American sequoia. These fossils are incredibly preserved and still have flexible fibers, the wood even burns. Simply...

Cycling - 100 Km around Milford, MI - USA
by ant1606 on Jul 05, 2009
Milford, Michigan, United States
Mountain biking | 60 miles
I took this ride on a Sunday and defined the 100 Km route after consulting maps showing road ratings for cyclists - traffic volume, shoulder, paved/unpaved etc. Not being familiar with this portion of highway M59, but seeing it listed with a "wide shoulder", I included it in the route. This came out to be not much enjoyable for a) there are nicer places to ride than along a high-traffic highway; b) the shoulder pavement is rough with...

Cycling - Avigliana
by ant1606 on May 11, 2009
Torino, Piedmont, Italy
Mountain biking | 42 miles
MTB route to and around the Lesser Avigliana Lake. Bug repellent prevents from being eaten alive if you plan to stop. I didn\'t have it with me and I admit I was quick to get going again after attempting to stop in the swamp-like woods environment. After the lake tour the route stays on shared roads and it\'s ideal for road bikes. A small portion of it is part of the #10 stage of...

Cycling - Ride to San Mauro
by ant1606 on Apr 18, 2009
Torino, Piedmont, Italy
Mountain biking | 23 miles
Cycling - Another city ride, from Pellerina park to San Mauro through several urban parks, Torino city center and a short climb to the Monte dei Cappuccini. My friend (picture) just bought a new MTB and it was a good occasion to test it on gravel, mud and down a short staircase.
Cycling - Around Torino
by ant1606 on Apr 14, 2009
Torino, Piedmont, Italy
Mountain biking | 33 miles
Cycling - Around Torino on cycle paths. Partial gravel along the Dora river and horrible pavement along the FIAT plant make this trip more enjoyable on a suspended bike.

Cycling - Lanzo - Devil's Bridge (Ponte del Diavolo)
by ant1606 on Feb 26, 2009
Lanzo, Piedmont, Italy
Mountain biking | 43 miles
Cycling - 70 Km round trip from Torino through the Mandria park to Lanzo. At the time it was built - started in AD 1378 - the bridge was such a marvel to be nicknamed "Devil's Bridge" and several legends revolved around it. The gate on it was later built (XIV century) to prevent foreigners to bring the plague into the town of Lanzo.
Cycling - Borgaro to Lanzo and back
by ant1606 on Feb 23, 2009
Torino, Piedmont, Italy
Mountain biking | 41 miles
Cycling - 70 Km round trip along the Stura di Lanzo river. This track unfolds on secondary roads as an officially "suggested" cycling route as per the posted bike signs, although these are sometimes difficult to be seen causing he route to be lost. I cleaned this recorded track from several wrong directions, making it now reliable for correct repetition. There is also a reported parallel route to the north which would make it a nice...

Cycling - Torino City Ride
by ant1606 on Nov 17, 2008
Torino, Piedmont, Italy
Mountain biking | 28 miles
Cycling - Torino city ride. This track, except for about one Km stretch near the start and end point, runs completely on dedicated bike path. Another worthwhile exception is the short climb to Monte dei Cappuccini for an excellent view of the city. The relaxed ride goes through enjoyable city parks, at times on gravel terrain which is least appreciated on a road bike. Consider 3 hours not including stops.
