STOP Ice on Road!Friday night - drove from Sac to Bishop and to the South Lake trailhead. As we neared the trailhead the road was blocked due to ice. We came upon the first road closure sign 4 miles out and went passed it with no problem. The 2nd road closure sign warned of ice and was only .4 miles from the TH. We played it safe and parked there and car-camped...
We started at the South Lake trailhead, just off of South Lake Rd. From here we hiked to through some beautiful Alpine lakes and up to Bishops Pass as 12,000 feet. At Bishops Pass we had a terrific view of the mountains and Mount Agassiz.
Initial PlanThe initial plan for this trip was for it to be an epic 4-peak day hike. We were to summit Mt. Carillon, take the ridge east to Mt. Russell, and across the Russell-Whitney saddle to the north face of Whitney. Finally we would take the main Whitney trail back to the trail head and climbing Muir on the way. Alas, it wasn't mean to be. The chosen route for Mt. Carillon...
This trip we left Sacramento around 5:30pm. Stopped in Polluck Pines to have dinner at a chinese restaurant there. The fortune cookie said "Now is the time to set your sights high and go for it" How fitting! We arrived in Lone Pine around midnight and proceeded to drive up the long switchbacks on Horseshoe Meadow Rd. Once in Horseshoe Meadows we parked at the Cottonwood Lakes trailhead. The lot was about half...

IntroductionThis trip was, in a word, awesome :) This was my first true mountaineering experience. I started peak hiking this summer beginning with Mount Whitney in July, and some Tahoe-area OGUL peaks in August. Shasta was a completely different animal though. It required the use of crampons and an ice axe to traverse through long, steep snow fields up the face of the mountain. Then to come down the mountain,...

This was my second peak bagging experience after Whitney. I went with a group called the "Nor Cal Peak Hikers". They are a good group of strong hikers who climb peaks on a regular basis and generally do it in one day. The leader of this hike has over 30 years experience and doing these types of exhibitions so I felt like I would be in good hands with this group. The...
Sunday night I was lying in bed surfing the net on my phone as I tried to get some sleep. I came across a posting on meetup.com for a hike to Mount Whitney for Thursday 7/28. The person had an extra permit and was looking for a hiking partner. It sounded exciting but I decided to sleep on it before signing up. Monday I emailed the person and said I was...

Checked out the new South Fork American River trail today which opened in Sep/Oct 2010. This was a longer ride for me as I haven't been on my bike much the last few months. But, I wanted to scope it out and see everything this new trail had to offer! It was worth it. Great views of the river and some unexpected surprises. There were a few creek crossings - all ride-able...
MY TO DO LISTHalf Dome has been on my to-do list all Summer. Then all of a sudden October snuck up on me and I realized I only had a week left to do it before the cables come down Oct 12th. I tried to plan a trip mid-week because permits aren't required on weekdays. However, the weather took a turn for the worst and I didn't want to risk it. So...
This ride starts at the Cavitt Jr. High School and goes out to the Beeks Bight parking lot and back. For this particular ride, we took the shortcut (if you want to call it that) uphill to the water-tower both on the way out and the way back!
A week ago Jen and I kayaked for four hours at Morro Bay and saw just one sea otter the entire trip. At Moss Landing, within fifteen minutes of being out in the water we saw a group of 20-30. If you love cute, playful otters, THIS is the place to do it! Note: Pictures are geotagged!Commuting WoesWe left Sacramento around 8:30am, expecting about a 3.5 hour drive. Unfortunately we were stuck...
What a wonderful trip! If you enjoy wild-life, this is a fantastic place to kayak. We were lucky enough to spot several species of birds, seals, and even a very playful sea-otter! We started our trip leaving Sacramento at 8am. We simply followed google's directions taking hwy 5 South for 3-4 hours, and then taking the hwy 41 junction towards Paso Robles. The total trip including bathroom-breaks was about 6 hours...
