This trip is our wanderings below Mutton Mountain and our return hike.
Hiked from Forest Service Road 7222 along the ridge to Noble Knob and on toward Mutton Mountain. Took off our packs and did a side trip to the top of Noble Knob. Followed elk trails down into the basin below Mutton Mountain where we camped. This side of the ridge is within the Norse Peak Wilderness Area. See part 2 of this trip to see our wanderings to a large meadow and small...
This was a leisurely hike up to Windy Pass, identifying plants and wildflowers. Wildflowers were blooming prolifically.
This hike is through an undeveloped Washington State Park near Diamond Point on the Miller Peninsula between Discovery Bay and Sequim Bay on the Olympic Peninsula. Except for the final mile, or so, as the trail goes down to the beach, it is on old logging roads. You should see blooming Western Rhododendrons along the trail in May. Beautiful forest of second growth Douglas fir and western red cedar with lush undergrowth...
A short hike in Obstruction Pass State Park.
A great hike on Orcas Island in the San Juan Islands in Washington. We only touched a small part of the trails in the Turtleback Mountain Preserve. Only tracked one way because phone battery died. Beautiful views of the San Juan Islands.

Walked a pleasant 2+ miles on the trails through a section of the Kitsap County Parks Department's Newberry Hill Heritage Park. Had to turn around at the north end of the beaver pond on the Beaver Pond Loop because of water completely covering the trail. A boardwalk is under construction at the south end, but was passable. Beautiful second growth forest on the east side, with understory of salal, evergreen huckleberry, and...
Paddled across the north end of Hood Canal, just north of the Hood Canal floating bridge to an "almost" island called Hood Head. Saw a harbor seal and a few harbor porpoises. In spite of the GPS data, we were at sea level the whole trip.
Parked at Strait View Road parking lot just off Highway 101. Rode a section of the Olympic Discovery Trail along the shoreline, through Port Angeles and out Ediz Hook to the gate of the Coast Guard Station, and back. The GPS track is for the return leg. Except for a few short sections the trail is paved. Beautiful, rare, spring/summer weather. This time of year (mid-June) much of the trail along the...
Started our day in Bend with a climb up Pilot Butte just east of downtown. It was a bright, sunny, but windy morning. Walked up the nature trail and down the closed summit road. Great views of the city and surrounding country side.
Theler Wetlands is at the head of Hood Canal, in the state of Washington. The Union River enters the Canal there. Walked the dikes and boardwalks while looking for birds. It was fairly windy, so saw only a few ducks - common and Barrow's goldeneyes, common mergansers, mallards, great blue heron, wigeon.
