One can start driving to the trail head from Linville, NC or from the BLue Ridge Parkway and take (SR 1511) Roseboro Rd south. It's several miles past the BRP down this narrow treacherous road. After the hike continue south and head to Edgemont and Mortimer where people still live. YOu can take Highway 90 which is a gravel road back to Lenoir or head to Globe Rd and drive that gravel road...
We got soaked on this hike!! Had to turn around and head back to Mt Collin's Shelter. After settling in and beginning to cook dinner, rangers come in and take 11 of us away b/c they were closing the shelter due to bear activity!!! Awesome timing!! This was around 7PM so not much time to make it to Double Spring shelter...
Start at the end of the Smokemont Campground. You can go up Chasteen and check out a small cascade. Continue on to Smokemont Loop.
If you are on the NC side, stop at Peter's Pancakes & Waffles for the backpackers pancakes! Start the trail going towards Charlies Bunion unless you want a LONG hike up via Dry Sluice Gap. The hike from Kephart to the AT was not that bad... It was a 14 mile hike. Get to Charlie's Bunion early! Listen carefully while at Charlie's Bunion, you may hear some wolves!!
