I have been targeting this hike since last year. Donner Pass to Squaw Valley on the Pacific Crest Trail (PCT). Because much of the hike is pretty high elevation you have to wait until the summer to allow the snow to melt. This week the planets aligned and we were able to do the hike. We had a toal of 6 of us, Dave, Andy, John, Kendra, Steve and myself. And 2...
Sawtooth Ridge Mt Bike Ride

Andy, Dave and I decided to go on a relatively mello mt bike ride near Truckee. As usual, there were a couple of geocaches to be found. Sawtooth Ridge hugs the Truckee River on top of the bluff for sometime. We also added a couple of out and backs. One to the top of Bald Mt. Here is a nice view of Martis Valley. The second taking us to a teepee. Really....
The main objective for our hike was to climb up to the top of Tamarack Peak and find a geocache located there. The first part of the hike is on a 4 wheel drive road. At some point you have to leave the road and go straight up to the top. Fortunately, there is no bushwacking required. Just good lungs. At the top you have great views of the Mt Rose Wilderness...
We call this POcifica for the abundance of poison oak. And this time of year it is sprouting all over the place. Today was my first mt bike ride with the posse (Robert, Bobby, Paul, Jason, Mark & Liem) since my bad biking accident in January. As usual, we parked at the elementary school. The plan was to ride to the top of Montara Mt. Robert calls the fire road the Matterhorn because it...
Almaden Quicksilver is cache central. There must be more than 50 caches here that will take a number of separate visits to find. Today I took the mt bike to cover more territory. Along with finding a bunch of caches this route took me to some old mining facilities. Lots of nice views of the Santa Cruz Mountains and of the numerous McMansions of Almaden Valley. Among the wildlife I saw was...
Since there were 2 new goecaches in this area I was excited to go on a hike. I was less excited about the weather as it was much colder than usual. Some snow was even reported on nearby hills. When I reached Skyline Blvd it was only 38°F. I followed the Grabtown Gulch, Borden Hatch Mill, Bald Knob, Irish Ridge trails to a big old growth redwood tree at the beginning of...
Golden Gate National Recreation Area Bike Ride

Today I met my friends Alan and Tony for a casual bike ride over the Golden Gate Bridge to Marin County. We headed up the Headlands and rode the legal fire road trails. This is a good ride for riders who are not into technical riding, but are relatively fit and want nice views. The day we rode was a spectacular cool fall day. Clear skies and not much wind. I wore...
Yesterday my former coworker Emilie invited us to go sailing with her sister Natalie from Michigan, niece Madeline and cousin Derek. It was Derek's 45 foot sailboat Kalea that we would be sailing. It was another record day of temperature in late fall. The big worry was that there wouldn't be enough wind. But there was enough to get moving pretty good.We sailed out of the Berkeley Marina in one long reach a...
from my buddy Andy's blog:I finally managed to ride the Flume Trail today. It has been toolong since I have traveled to the east shore of Tahoe to ride thisclassic trail. Normally, the Aspen Trees are absolutely glowing asyou ride up North Canyon and shoot down to Marlette Lake from theSpooner State Park. Today, October 26, 2008, it was warm enough toride in shorts and a T Shirt. There was not more...
Andy and I headed out for a little mountain biking and geocaching. We started at Alpine Meadows and rode north along the Truckee River Trail. At the bridge veer right off the paved trail to the Western States Trail. Turn left at the top of the Western States and take the road to The Wall. At the top one can follow out route on the Tahoe Rim Trail (TRT) to Painted Rock, or...
A fun, not too difficult mountain bike ride. Some climbing required. Nice views of Castle Peak. Lots of granite slabs and boulders.
Not your typical hike. Rather a helicopter sightseeing tour for my parent's celebrating there 50th wedding anniversary. Our pilot was John from Bay Aerial. Starting point was the San Carlos Airport. The general path was traveling north along the peninsula to San Francisco. From there it was over to Marin to Angel Island, where there was a large fire just the prior day, Sausalito, over and under the Golden Gate Bridge and...
Andy and I headed out for a hike to find a couple of geocaches. This was a real hard hike. We don't recommend it unless you are a hardcore geocacher. Far too much cross country across scree slopes and through thick vegetation. Ran out of food and water. I started with lots of food and 100 oz of water. Forgot the camera so sorry, no pics.
Went out with Andy to do some geocaching up the Granite Chief and Pacific Crest Trails. After finding the 2 caches we headed to High Camp and took the tram down. Officially, you are supposed to pay $10 for the trip down. But if you don't hesitate just walk onto the tram. Keeping a phone to your ear might help. There are at least 4 caches along this route. The last section on...
shuttled up the road and mountain biked down The Entertainer trail. Lots of jumps along the way. video of the ride at:http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=AatxJ3Rn-Kk
