Mountain biking | 13.5 miles
We rode this loop in a CCW direction starting from TH#1 which is located at the Los Burros campground and historic ranger station. Parts of it had been closed last year due to a prescribed burn so it was nice to ride the whole loop.
Panorama Trail Loop
by lantzem on Jun 04, 2011
Pinetop, Arizona, United States
Mountain biking | 9.4 miles
We rode the Panorama Loop CW starting at the trailhead off Porter Mtn Rd. A great loop for beginner to intermediate riders. For me this was an excellent acclimation ride for my XTERRA race the following day.

Tucson Mtn Park Rock & Road Challenge
by lantzem on Mar 27, 2011
Tucson, Arizona, United States
Mountain biking | 56 miles
This was my fifth attempt at the Challenge, having completed the previous loop a few months ago with a total time of around 7 3/4 hours. We opted for the Brown Mtn. bypass option which is much harder but you get to subtract 1 hour from your total time. In my opinion it was not worth it due to the amount of time you are carrying your back up switchbacks too steep...

Antelope Peak Challenge
by lantzem on Jan 29, 2011
Oracle, Arizona, United States
Mountain biking | 62 miles
My GPS route from the Antelope Peak Challenge, one of the Arizona Endurance Series races. This course consists of a lot of pavement and dirt roads, as well as the Arizona Trail and other single-track. The gas line section of the course was pure hell, there were multiple climbs exceeding 20% grade. I deviated from the course about 52 miles in but realized it about a mile later, which sucked because it cost...

Tucson Mtn Park Rock & Road Challenge
by lantzem on Jan 09, 2011
Tucson, Arizona, United States
Mountain biking | 56 miles
This was my fourth attempt at the Challenge, having completed the previous loop a few months ago with a total time of around 9 hours. This time we finished about 1.5 hours earlier than before. This is a great training loop for other endurance events due to the varying terrain and substantial elevation gain. We started at the Sweetwater trailhead this time instead of Starr Pass and were happier with that since you get...

Tortolita Loop
by lantzem on Dec 26, 2010
Tucson, Arizona, United States
Mountain biking | 26 miles
I wanted to check out the new trails the county crew is putting in so I set out on an exploratory ride in the Torts. I started at the small private memorial parking lot at Moore and Como Rd and rode north to Cougar Canyon Rd (no cougar moms spotted) and headed up the Jeep road into the mountains. The road is pretty steep in sections but it eventually levels out and you come...
McDowell Mtn Park to Sonoran Preserve - 11/7/10
by lantzem on Nov 06, 2010
Fort McDowell, Arizona, United States
Mountain biking | 26 miles
I started at the Pemberton TH inside McDowell Mtn Park and rode the Pemberton CCW to the Coachwhip Trail and took it to Windmill Trail which takes you to the boundary with McDowell Sonoran Preserve. Once inside the preserve I continued on and took Windgate Pass (what a climb!) to the saddle and then bombed down the other side of Windgate to Desert Park Trail. This trail seems like an old service...

by lantzem on Sep 09, 2010
Tucson, Arizona, United States
Mountain biking | 7.6 miles
Started from Richard E. Genser trailhead and took the Rock Wren trail to intersection with the shortcut to 36th St. Took 36th St. trail to shortcut to Robles connector, then took that to Cat Mtn and up Cat Mtn trail. Took Starr Pass trail back to start.
Arizona Trail - Bellota Loop
by lantzem on Aug 27, 2010
Tucson, Arizona, United States
Mountain biking | 10.0 miles
We parked at the ATV staging area which is 10 miles up Redington Rd. From there we took the ATV trail east which crosses FR36 and then crosses Redington before running parallel to it until you reach the AZT crossing. We took the AZT northwest from there and then came to the junction with FR36 which we took back to the staging area. The trail was a little overgrown but that was...
Arcadia Trail (Pinaleno Mtns)
by lantzem on Aug 15, 2010
Safford, Arizona, United States
Mountain biking | 5.0 miles
We did this trail as shuttle, beginning at the Shannon CG trailhead. The first 1/2 mile is moderately easy, with a slight incline. After that, it gets much steeper with tight switchbacks for about 1/2 mile until you reach the junction with Heliograph Peak trail. This is the high point of the trail, and it begins a steep descent from here passing thru a recent burn area with very poor trail conditions....
