Hiking Trails and Trips in United States

One of my favorite things about Almaden Quicksilver County Park is that there is always a hike option, whether you want something short and easy or something long and steep. The park offers both nature and an interesting history so it's fun to wander around and see what you come across.I decided to take advantage of a nice afternoon and get in a short hike. The goal was to gauge my condition...
Mt Sizer, Henry Coe (Plus bonus peak!)

Madrone Soda Springs (historical), California, United States
Hiking | 15.8 miles
Hiking | 15.8 miles
A classic Bay Area hiking loop is Mt Sizer in Henry Coe. This hike is a minimum of 14 miles to do using the in-and-out shortest approach, or you can make a loop and do this loop. At about 16 miles it is just long enough to offer solitude and remoteness, but is easy to do as a day trip from San Jose.Between Poverty Flat and Blue Ridge, don't miss the opportunity...
Monument and Mission Peak BART Segment

Mobilodge of Milpitas, California, United States
Hiking | 13.5 miles
Hiking | 13.5 miles
Oh, where to start. There are many things about this hike that were great - the flowers, the views, the lovely and solitary hike along the ridge between the two peaks. But they were overshadowed by the final ~4 mile segment along the Agua Caliente and Calera Creek Trails which was steep, lacking in signage, and absolutely decimated by cattle to the point where I nearly broke my ankle more times than...
Excellent round trip hike from sea level at Stinson Beach to the summit of Mt Tamalpais and back. The myriad of trails on Mt Tam allow for some creativity with the loop and an incredible variety of terrain. We parked at the beach and picked up the Dipsea Trail from just south of the fire station. From Dipsea we followed Steep Ravine up and connected with old road for the rest of the...
We knew the waterfalls would be good after the recent storms, so Antony, Dave, Laurent, Sammy, David and I headed out to Big Basin this weekend. We had a rough loop planned that included the Skyline to the Sea Trail so we were a bit disappointed when we showed up and learned the trail was closed due to a washed out bridge and fallen old-growth redwoods across the trail. Not a group to...
Redwood Peak via the Bay Area Ridge Trail from Chabot

Eastmont, California, United States
Hiking | 11.8 miles
Hiking | 11.8 miles
Redwood Peak is an easy little peak that's a stone's throw from the nearest trailhead. Not one to take the easy way, I decided to approach it from a trailhead several miles away in Chabot.Let me back up a second - I actually started off the day with a goal to hike a segment of the Bay Area Ridge Trail. I needed to finish up the last few miles in Chabot (from...
What can I say that hasn't been said by all of the other attendees of today's hike? It's a great stretch of the Bay Area Ridge Trail. The spider web of logistics is worth it.Additional Photos available hereBlog entry with additional details here
A hike in the pouring rain with no views and wet feet. It was a blast. :)
The Teutonia Peak trail is one of only two (I believe) maintained trails within Mojave. However, the trail does *not* go all the way to the peak - the real peak is about 200 yards and a 3rd class scramble away from the end of the trail. This track ends just below the last stretch of 3rd class approach to the summit. We took a cross-country route down the peak and returned to...
Great desert peak and relatively easy (but steep) cross country route. Wonderful views!Trip Report herePhotos here
We followed the Zdon suggested route up, and came down a more direct way. Note: the return (more direct) hike is quite possible but will require route finding and/or 3+ class scrambling. The 'jog' in the route is where we passed through the cliff of volcanic rock.Blog entry with additional detailsPhotos

Turtlehead peak - a short but steep scramble to a great view of Red Rocks and the Las Vegas strip. Requires cross-country travel, route finding, and if you pick the wrong route, some 3rd class scrambling.Blog entry about Turtlehead PeakPhotos from Turtlehead Peak
Sidewinder Canyon, Death Valley

Photos from Sidewinder CanyonBlog entry about this tripSidewinder Canyon is an amazing canyon. We started late in the day (2pm, sunset at 4:30pm) and deeply regretted the limited time we had to explore the canyon. Sidewinder is unique due to all of the slot canyons that branch off of the main canyon (which also narrows to a near-slot at times). Some slots are easy to find and explore - others require some minor...
Day 1 of 9: Thanksgiving 2009 Desert Road TripFossil Falls is only a short hop off of 395 and has a large nice parking area and BLM campground with basic features. We drove out from the Bay Area late on Friday night and found a campsite in the empty campground around 10 pm. Set up, had a beer, and enjoyed the beautiful starry sky. In the morning we awoke to a lava...
I had spent the week at home with the flu and was drying to get out for some fresh air. On top of that, I had received a new camera and wanted to try it out. Not wanting to over-exert my flu-weakened body, I decided for a nice stroll to the summit of Black Mountain from the Monte Bello entrance near Skyline/Pagemill. Although the forecast was for clear skies, I ended up hiking...
A long but beautiful hike over the Pinnacles High Peaks and back via the North Wilderness (unmaintained) trail. Trip report with photos and details available here.
A short hike in Fremont Older that hits all of the high points. Starts from a side entrance (see track). High Points: Hunters Point, Maiseys Peak, and Nob Hill.
