Walking | 5.5 miles
QiQi's 2nd NYC trip. He will remember a lot this time instead of the only impression of 'Drunken Homeless' when he had the 1st trip three years ago. "There were lots of fun in 1st/2nd day..." and ChuChu enjoyed her every second in NYC. "come back tomorrow" is ChuChu's last word before she went to sleep on her way back to Boston..

Lincoln School to Codman Bridge over MBTA Commuter Rail (Fitchburg Line)
by itfaster on Nov 24, 2011

Hiking | 3.5 miles
The last trial in the Lincoln Passport Program. We left around 3PM to give our chef some quite space in the kitchen to prepare the Thanksgiving day "turkey". Though it is the early winter, we saw five groups of people in the 1st half of the trail. We crossed three brooks and a few muddy spots. There were some trees decorated by kids from the Lovelane Riding Program, QiQi love the 'Bob...

Sudbury River Source: Cedar Swamp Pond (Westborogh)
by itfaster on Nov 12, 2011

Hiking | 2.2 miles
Previous kayak trip ended in south Framingham because the poor river condition. I have to search the source of Sudbury River by land. It turn out not easy either. The map shows that Walkup Dr is the closest road, but it has no road/trail to go further. The extension of Brigham St leads a trail parallel to the commuter rail track. Only able to view the Cedar Swap Pond from top of a...

by itfaster on Nov 12, 2011

Kayaking / Canoeing | 0.5 miles
The fall is almost over before it starts. We had a Halloween snow storm and 3 days without electricity. Let me make anther trip for the source of Assabet river with this sunny Saturday though the temparature is only around 45F. First 2 stops (Rt20, Brigham Rd) are not able to kayak. Plan was changed to go the Assabet Reservoir. The waves were big and cold water were splashed on my pants...

Assabet River: Hudson Library to ‘Potato Island’
by itfaster on Oct 15, 2011
Hudson, Massachusetts, United States
Kayaking / Canoeing | 4.7 miles
The initial plan was to start from South Street and go downstream. I had to change plan again, no way to go downstream from here. The sky was clear but windy, took some efforts to paddle upstream against the current. This section of river is really quite and only less than 10 residential house visible along the trip. I had the similar feeling to one section (upstream of little farm land) of...

Assabet River: West Pond Rd (Stow) to 'Forks'
by itfaster on Oct 08, 2011
Lower Village, Massachusetts, United States
Kayaking / Canoeing | 7.1 miles
After a few failed searches in the morning and a very short trip, a local resident helped me locate a good launching spot on West Pond Rd. A really good section (if not the best) section of Assabat river for Kayak finally started…The weather this weekend is unbelievable, high 85F in Oct 8. Definitely should be the last week wearing short this year. The journey ended at the regions with multiple 'forks',...

Kayaking / Canoeing | 1.2 miles
Tried two spots and failed launching my Kayak Pine Street: can’t access because of rapid current and no ramp, fell into water, and kayak nearly capsized. Damondale Dam: can’t access water, though with parking lot in Damondale office park Finally, found Last National Wine Parking lot and start from upstream of Powermill Dam. access by carrying kayak down a small slope, the trip only goes bout 20min because the current and shallow water.

Concord River (From Faulkner St Dam, Billerica to Lawrence Street Bridge, Lowell)
by itfaster on Sep 10, 2011
North Billerica, Massachusetts, United States
Kayaking / Canoeing | 7.0 miles
My original plan is to try Assabet River since the rain in last week should make the Pine Street a better spot to go upstream. Unfortunately, Assabet got too much water and flood the west side of river. I have to change the plan to continue the last week’s trip on Concord River downstream from the Faulkner Street Dam. Two more surprises: no parking spots, the current near the dam is impossible...

A short hiking and driving trip finishes the last leg of Concord River and arrives the Merrimack River. The river condition downstream of Lawrence Street is not safe for kayak. Senator Paul E. Leaving behind a poisoned planet whose resources are inadequate to sustain the population is...

Kayaking / Canoeing | 6.8 miles
Next Monday will be Labor Day, so this could be the last trip this summer unless I can still go out again tomorrow. It is a long trip with total on-the-water time about 6 hours, similar to the 9PM return trip end at Sherman’s bridge. The 1st half of river is at least 100 yards wide and not many residential houses visible due to the Great meadows on right. The 2nd half...

by itfaster on Sep 03, 2011
North Billerica, Massachusetts, United States
Kayaking / Canoeing | 6.8 miles
The return trip is the most difficult one this summer. A few factors contribute the challenge: Hurricane Irene brought lots of water, strong current upstream especially near Pollard Street, peddle against wind. Finally, I haven’t recovered from four hours driveway sealing work. There is a small island about 0.5 mile upstream of Rt 3. No time to land and explore this time.

The 6th trail in Lincoln's Conservation Land. This is a wet week, rained in the morning. Again, this is another trail longer than 2 miles.  QiQi and Quin completed the trail in about an hour and half. Have to pack my stuff and leave for New York City this afternoon.

The rain stopped around 2PM,  waked up QiQi around 5:00PM...The Black Gum Trail is from Walden Pond all the way around the Sandy (Flint) Pond. Kayaking / Canoeing | 4.9 miles
Time is about 10AM. it is time to go back. I notice that most of my Kayak trip is about 5-6 hours door to door. I guess longer trip may need more than one apple and dozen of biscuit. I don't feel the wind on side both ways, straight portion of the river is really not my favorite.

Kayaking / Canoeing | 6.6 miles
I decided to stop exploring Assabet River upstream from Concord and start to go Concord River since the Assabet river water level is so low in the dry summer season. It fells good getting up 6AM with he early summer morning's cool air while driving to my launching spot, Lowell Rd, Concord. Most of 2nd part of the river is more than 100 yards wide and very straight when it nears the...

Kayaking / Canoeing | 4.9 miles
This is the 1st trip on Assabet River, the 2nd early morning trip this summer. It is hard to believe the morning temperature is only 55F and chilly with T-shirt and short only.  Most Assabet river in this part of trip is about 20-30 yards wide and have a few rapid spots during the trip.

The return trip make me really want to call Assabet river the "Turtle's Heaven". There are so many painted turtle taking sun bath on the fallen trees in this quiet morning summer. Do they have a job to do? Or the lingering effects of 2008 financal crsis still here? Or all "man" in turtle's world basically only enjoy life regardless how old they are.

The 1st Ocean Kayak Trip for QiQi. Thanks for Karen's generosity. We had a wonderful vacation week in Wellfleet, Cape Cod. For past three days, I noticed that there have been consistently SW wind about 15-17MPH. I don't think it is good idea to take QiQi for the kayak after seeing a few kayaks capsized due to the strong wind. Finally, In our morning of our last day. The ocean is very...

Uncle Tim's Bridge (Cape Cod)
by itfaster on Jul 21, 2011
Wellfleet, Massachusetts, United States
Hiking | 1.1 miles
Uncle Tim's Bridge was rebuilt in 2008 on Duck Creek,  It is a wood bridge connecting the eastern part of Wellfleet. After crossing the bridge, we had a quick tour on the this little peninsula. There are many fiddler crabs on the shore. We also found many intact house shoe crabs shells.
