Most of the trailheads at J. D. Grant park start you at the bottom of your trek, this hike is one of the exceptions. The lower section of the Canada de Pala trail, starting from the Twin Gates trailhead, drops over 800 feet on a slalom-like fire road before it climbs back up to the Hotel trail. The Hotel trail then climbs back up 400 feet to Eagle Lake. I hopped off the...
Just a quick ride up the Hotel trail in J.D. Grant park. I was originally going to follow the Foothill trail to the Bonhoff trail to a section of the Canada de Pala trail, but it was pretty warm out there and after 1200 ft of climbing I decided to cut it short. Nice downhill though.

Though there are always a fair number of people hiking biking and horseback riding, and it's not a huge place, it doesn't feel crowded and there's a lot of wild life. Today's trip especially. A coyote crossed the trail just yards ahead of me, a flock...
Greg invited me to share his permit for the Alma College site between Bear Creek Road and highway 17 and we spent a couple of hours exploring the ruins.
