The uphill terminus was at the western overlook of Holly Lake, not the closer (by 1 mile) and lower approach to Holly Lake.
The clear trail provided easy passage with a bit more than 3,000' of elevation gain in 4 miles. The summit is at 10,281'. The wildflowers drew our attention, with many species of bloomers about ready to pop. We examined fossils in rocks near the snowfields.
I don't understand the variation in data from the same Garmin GPS. The posted data for our trip varies a bit. The GPS showed 22.25 when we finished with an average moving speed of 2.4 mph and an overall average of 2.0 mph.A few of us in a hiking group had expressed an interest in doing this formerly unknown through-hike. When a date was established, 3 of us were able to do...
July 23, 2011 -- There is STILL at least 3' of snow on the ground at the elevation of the lakes (Surprise: 9570', Amphiteater: 9698'). Most of the trail up to that elevation is snow-free or has snow patches that are normally of minor consequence. Valley-level wildflowers are fading, but there are a lot of flowers along the trail with "spring flowers" in abundance at higher elevations. My GPS's batteries were about drained...
We hiked from the parking lot at the southeast end of the lake to the west end of the lake via the north-side trail, a gently rolling (mostly flat) trail. It had more open meadows, less mosquitoes, and lots of wildflowers. From a trail junction at the west end of the lake we started a steady uphill .9 mile trek to the summit of Grandview Point, one of the few volcanic features...
Twelve of us rode the tram from Teton Village to the 10,446' summit to hike to Marion Lake. Shortly after the start of the return to the tram, I turned left (east) to hike down the mountain through Granite Canyon, emerging at the Granite Canyon Parking Area in Grand Teton National Park.
Departed Whitegrass R.S.; hiked to Mt. Hunt Divide with rain/snow mix in upper 500' elev.; on Valley Trail at NW edge of Phelps we took the new trail through the former LS Rockefeller area to the parking lot at the LSR VC.
