Hiking Trails and Trips in United States
Trips
An epic day of bushwhacking, routefinding, and wading up the river...Ignore the absurd elevation numbers which have to relation to reality!
Slooow hike for me. I'm out of shape for the hills!Actual elevation gain more like 1600', not 5,000, LOL.

I usually backpack this every year, but this year I could only make it on Sunday. So I did a day hike to Mustang Pond with my Hillside Straggler buddies.I started my track late so the RT mileage should really be like 8.4mi.
A short hike on a slightly drizzly day, looping from Forbes Mill museum. We had actually planned to make the hike a bit longer by heading to Lexington, crossing the dam and returning on the west side of the Los Gatos Creek Trail but we took a wrong turn... On the plus side, Mike was getting cold anyway, and we got to Andale at a good time for our post-hike lunch, since...
It had been a few months since our last Hillside Stragglers hike, and that one was on flat ground, so were were psyched for a good hike. Being December 24th and having Christmas Eve festivities to attend, we opted for a short hike in nearby Alum Rock so that we'd be done as early as possible. This brought a nice 1,000' of climb (nothing like that 4900' the track suggests (sorry iPhone, and...
Hiking solo in an unfamiliar place during a huge storm is a good recipe for a memorable time. The winds howled through the trees and the trail was more like a stream in places, but the real fun came on the exposed bluffs. There, the 75mph winds ripped my fleece beanie right off my head, and I felt lucky to find it later about 80' away, stuck in the tall grass. The wind...
This was going to be a much longer hike, but Dwayne overslept and so we started almost an hour behind schedule. Just as well, as Mike had injured one of his legs in a freak accident with his other foot...Still, this was a nice 6-mile hike in pleasant weather. We hiked the Mallard Slough trail just in time - which is why I chose this hike for today - as it will...
I hadn't done this hike since 2006 I think, but this was my third time. Mike and Dwayne hadn't been here before though and I knew they'd like it.It's a short hike at around 4 miles RT. On the way up to the old fire lookout area the elevation gain is around 1500', and the trail is virtually all uphill. So this is short but good exercise, which was just what we...
This was the first short hike of a two-hike day. We'd never been to the 'Iao Valley before but it looked like a "must see" location and it really was beautiful. There are a pair of very short paved paths near the parking area, and then a dirt trail runs west from one of those paths. It splits into multiple paths that generally follow the Iao Stream west. We followed these paths for...
Spring is the best time at Pinnacles, when the flowers are at their peak and it's not absurdly hot. Starting at the west entrance, this clockwise loop took my friends and I through the Balconies Caves trail (and through the short but cool cave section), back around the pretty flat northern part of the park, then up through the High Peaks trail where we hit the big climb.Fortunately, the climb is worth...
The
Waihee Ridge Trail is short but uphill the entire way to Lanilili peak
(2569’) at the end of the hike. You’ll climb pretty much non-stop for
about 1,500’, with very little flat or downhill, until you reach the peak. Of course, the hike back is nearly all downhill. Along
the way up there is a bench with view of a large waterfall, but since the
falls are something like a mile...
I had a couple of free hours and was getting cabin fever at home, so I decided to come hike for a couple of hours in Calero. I'd not been on one of the trails here so it was nice to hike something new, and it was a nice trail too.The weather was absolutely perfect and the park was completely green, with flowers in bloom. Now is probably the best time of...
I'd hiked along the northern part of Calero Reservoir, but never up what I've always called "Red Hill". I wanted to hike up it, and also see if I could hike across Calero Dam and along the west side of the reservoir to Cherry Cove Trail.I was able to hike all of these places, although there is a small spillway where the aqueduct dumps into Calero that I had to be careful...
This was the first hike my "Hillside Stragglers" group had done in several months, and we handled the elevation gain well for being out of practice. The route was designed to get us out on some trails we'd not been on here, and to take advantage of the perfect hiking weather.
5.5 miles according to EveryTrail, 5.6 miles according to Garmin. Originally I was going to have us hike a little further north in the same part of the park but this worked out pretty well, and we were able to see some new trails. The trails on the east side of the ridge are more wooded, shadier, and tend to have more narrow and single-track trails. Also there was more flora (mushrooms,...
A short, easy group hike with friends on a warm February(!) day... All six of us were in shorts.
Nice family hike on a gorgeous January(!) day. Longest hike ever for the 7yo, and also for the Mrs. I think. Awesome!
A nice family hike, looping on the new-ish Townsprings trail, etc. It was cool, and a bit muddy, but there were few other people around once we left the Willow Springs trail.Your version of this loop will be a half mile shorter than ours if you don't make a wrong turn at waypoint 001. Stick to the right where the trail splits and go over the small bridge.
I had a nice solo hike of about nine miles out at Don Edwards National Wildlife Refuge on a December Sunday afternoon. The weather was overcast but temperatures were mild. Once I got away from the trail near the visitor's center I only saw about one person an hour! This track is edited (trimmed down) to make a more cohesive hike, without the various side trips I took while there.Note there is one...
