Road biking Guides and Trips in Ireland
Trips
Just a short muscle loosening trip as I was working in Galway.
Saturday May 5th Mayo Pink Ribbon trip in aid of Breast Cancer Research. 3 route choices 50k 100k or 160k I chose the 100k trip. Great biking conditions. 500 cyclists including the Prime Minister Enda Kenny and Eamonn Coughlan former 5000metres world champion. I made the trip in 5 hours, very pleased with that.
On Saturday I will do 100k for charity Pink Ribbon Mayo, this was a training run in preparation.I stopped for a few minutes at the Lahardane Titanic Memorial. It is a very tastefulmemorial to those from the village who lost their lives the night the Titanic sank.
Easy flat Tarmac surface all the way. Most suitable for a hybrid as a delicate tyred bike could get flats easy enough. The day was fine enough if grey. Divert down the spur to visit Annaghdown Quay and Priory. I always wanted to see where the boat left from in 1828, it sank and led to the drowning of 19 persons. Raftery, the poet wrote a fine lament on the subject and...
Another glorious November day. Pauline cycled the Greenway to Achill, then I took off by road to circle Currane, while she returned along the greenway. Down along Achill Sound and round Clew Bay, and back to the start at Mulranny. There was a very strong headwind along Achill Sound that reduced my average speed significantly.Beautiful views of Croagh Patrick across the bay. Please ignore all stats except distance, it is accurate. This was...

This was day three of a coast to coast trip. Seven cyclists took part 4

race more a back roads trip from Dublin to Mayo. this was the hurricane day and we often considered abandoning, however we prevailed and got four team members to Charlestown. Trip distance is correct [62.4 k] other stats are just wrong!!!...

Road biking | 53 miles
This was day 2 of Coast to Coast by the Royal Canal and back roads of Ireland. 7 riders on Road, Touring and Hybrid bikes. Distance is accurate other stats are not. Great trip great companions. If you are doing this you will need to be a skilled navigator. there are lots of narrow traffic free back roads, many with a mane of green grass in the middle. Some very short stretches...

Road biking | 53 miles
This was day one of a coast to coast trip. Seven cyclists took part 4 USA 3 Irish. We had back up to carry luggage, drinks etc. It was not a race more a back roads trip from Dublin to Mayo. Day one was dry and calm. Trip distance is correct [85.8 k] other stats are just wrong!!! We used the royal Canal where it was rideable by road bike. We pretty...
Just a training run for the cross Ireland trip. Sinead and I loosening up. Used Turlough road and N5 out to Bohola and then minor roads with a steady climb up to Treenduff, some nice fast descents. Very quiet minor roads [grass in the middle] back as far as Gortnafolla.
Early morning spin around the lake.
We plan to following the route of the French army of 1798 from where they landed in north Mayo to Ballinamuck in county Longford where they were defeated by General Lake. So far we have completed the route to Castlebar county Mayo, where General Humbert declared a Republic, having routed a superior English force in a battle that has come to be called "The races of Castlebar." The next part of the...
I am in Castleblayney working for two days. So I got a chance to get in a short bike trip after work and before it got dark. This seemed the obvious one to do. i will add a pic or two later. Nice easy ride. I used my Giant Hybrid with road wheels and a heavish tyre. Needed because of rough surface.
Alastair and I really enjoyed this trip on quietish country roads, on flat terrain. We achieved a nice average speed. The day was calm and cool.
This is a road challenge organised by Gael Force West, it is new, it involves two types of bikers. Those doing the Road Challenge and those doing the Mountain Biking. This year I chose the road bike challenge. The idea is to keep a team member on the road for 24 hours, we had a team of 4 and our combined ages was 214 years, we enjoyed ourselves. It was so interesting...
