Starting at Portland Basin, Ashton under Lyne our merry band of 18 Log (The Lancashire Outdoor Group) members and guests, cycled the scenic 23 miles round trip to the Roman Lakes Leisure Park via the Peak Forest Canal, Hyde, Werneth Low, Etherow Country Park, Brabyns Park and Marple Bridge, returning via Marple Locks and the Peak Forest canal. A 12 mile cycle trip around Saddleworth certainly helps to get over a New Years Day hangover. Its hard work cycling up all those hills but immensely enjoyable on the downhill sections, this trip took us on some of the many bridle paths in the area. across farmland, and a few miles of roadwork. The beautiful scenery makes all that hard work well worth while.

Our ride started from the Portland Basin museum and heritage centre in Ashton Under Lyne, which in itself you can spend a pleasant hour or so looking at the exhibits, along the Peak Forest canal to Marple Junction, which meets up with the Macclesfield canal. This was a tough 16 mile circular ride but the scenery was fantastic, the pictures do not do it justice. This is my local area and I often ride these trails either by Mountain bike or Horseback, just joining different bits together depending how far and how long I want to go out for. We set off from the Ashton canal basin on the towpath towards Manchester. We soon arrived at Sport City home to Manchester City Football Club and the Manchester Velodrome, no time to stop and in no time we arrived at Great Ancoats Street just outside city centre Manchester, then Piccadilly basin, through the City Centre, Princess Street and then Canal Street which is the centre of the Gay Village in Manchester.
